Eberron -- What do you LIKE?

This one's near the top of my list already. The more I hear, the better it sounds-- though I missed out on the setting design contest thing that spawned it.

I like the idea of foraging through old stuff and putting together clues (anthropology undergrad), but there's something to be said about being there at the height of things as well.

Funny, but unrelated story: I was telling my gf about roleplaying, and she was only kind of interested until I mentioned that adventurers looted ruins, and she got all excited about playing a character that was basically an archeologist/explorer (her major). :)

Related stuff: The "chicken-like riding beasts" comment was supposed to be slightly snarky - I guess loss of context goes both negative and positive. And why exactly haven't you played any of FF4-6? Should be remedied immediately.

I'm not sure you can answer this question Keith, but how much did you try to break the standard mole with rehard to racial cultures, and WOTC set any limitations? All of the races seem (based on current info) to be a sort of standard mold, with a slight spin on them, and I was just curious.

rules of the contest. same but different. ;)

Y'know what's ironic. I made a world very much like this back on the WebRPG design forums. I abandoned it, thinking nobody would like it...

No, no...I think you mean nobody would get to see it... :D

I like the term Pulp Fantasy and so far I like what little has come out about the setting and in a way it reminds me of Earthdawn (which may be just from the artwork).

While it is still far away and deltails are lacking I am looking forward on see it and learning more.

I think it looks pretty cool. The art really did it for me; it's very evocative. I particularily liked the "spire city" pic; it brought the setting to life for me. And the flying ship with the elemental ring is pretty cool too. I haven't looked at the "bash Eberron" thread since it started, but I can't see how there is enough info to tear it apart. I dunno, it looks different to me and has some potential. But we'll have to see what happens.

[edit] I used the word "really" far too many times in that post. :p

I'm surprised that you can get much out of the current info! I suppose that there are a few hints about the different Elven nations, and the Talenta halflings are highlighted, but there's a lot more to learn about all of these cultures.

Hmm. It's a hard question to answer without examples of what you consider to be far from the traditional mold. For example, I consider the dinosaur riding halflings to be something of a break from tradition (and there is far more to their culture than dinosaurs). I'm particularly happy with the gnomes of Eberron, as gnomes are rarely taken seriously. In general, though, Diaglo has hit it on the head. WotC wanted to make sure that things weren't so bizarre that it didn't feel like D&D anymore. The Elven nations are very different from what I've seen in other settings, but they are still distinctly Elven... and unfortunately I can't be any more specific than that. And there are always options -- not all halflings are dinoriders. A few of the more unusual elements actually arose out of discussions with Bill Slavicsek, James Wyatt, and Christopher Perkins, during the early stages of working on the corebook for the setting; so far from holding things back, the WotC folks actually helped move things a little further from the standard mold.

There are also a number of new PC races, a few of which can be spotted in the "across Eberron" pamphlet...

This will probably be my last post for a while, as I must get back to my deadlines. More as more news is released!
