Eberron -- What do you LIKE?

I personally like the idea of "magic as a tool". One of the things that's always bothered me is the strange dichotomy of lots of spellcasters and no practical uses for magic. Unless magic is brand new, I fail to see why culture wouldn't evolve to incorporate magic-use into common society, if it is as common as seems to be suggested. All hail the +1 Hoe of Digging! :p

And if "dinosaurs" turn out to be chicken-like riding beasts, then I think we have a valid case for complaining it rips of Final Fantasy VI. Funny thing is (spoiler), at the end of FFVI there's no more magic because you've destroyed the source of it, so you could play it as a non-magic world. :)

I like the art and I like the feel it evokes. It definitely looks like something I'd be interested in buying and playing. I've completely shifted to a preference for strange and unique worlds. But not every one can be a completely-stocked Forgotten Realms. Sometimes it's only good for a single adventure. I'm thrilled to see something like this coming to market. This is what I'd hoped d20/OGL to give rise to.

Hey all!

For the record, I've never actually seen or played FFVI, or -- shamefully, since I used to be a computer game designer -- any Final Fantasy game, so any overlap is completely unintentional. And while there are halflings riding dinosaurs (as seen in the "Across Eberron" sketches), dinosaurs are not just chicken-like riding beasts.

I'd love to actually address some of the specific posts here, but my hands are tied (literally -- I'm typing with my nose). I'm sure things will become clearer over the course of the next year, but from what I'm seeing I think you'll be happy with the end result. And if I don't post again for a while, it's because I probably shouldn't be posting anything at all at this point. :D

What I Like!

I aplogise for any spelling incosntisitesies, I've been to a drink testing party, and my spelling is seroiusly imparieda.l.. hmmm... reduced... or whatevert.. :D

Ok, what I like:

Steampunk feeling. I don't know if that's the correct feeling, but I like it so far. More tech and fantasy moulded together will give me new ideas and rules!

Action points for D&D = another rules concept officialey addapted to D&D is a good thing for me.

But to be honest, I like the pictures better than the written description of the setting... it's different from what I normally throew at my players. The pictures evoke some sort of epic Star Wars feeling for me...

I like the fact that I would not come up with this idea myself. I'm more of a Midnight guy when it comes to thinking about new ideas, so for ME this is something new and potentially exciting!

Looking forward to more info!

Cheers!

Thanks for chipping in, Keith.

Let's see, a question that probably doesn't violate an NDA...

Can you tell us how much input you had on the concept art? Did you have fairly direct control or just say "it should look kinda like..." and see what they came up with?

Well I don't care what anybody else says, I like dinosaurs and I like trains, and I'm going to have miraphants ('advanced' sauropods) blocking African rails on a nearly monthly basis in my world. So there.:p

Besides which, when I purchase my copy in August of 2004 I will be sitting myself down, reading through it, and gleefully noting those places where I thought of it first.:)

"Alan, not only are you weird, you're proud of it"---Fellow gamer.

Good luck Keith.:D

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but the description made me think of the Arcanum RPG for PCs (from Troika? I forget). The inclusion of some tech in that world parallel to magic was really fun to experience, as were the industrial big city settings.

What I like?

The art and press release on Gaming Report gave me a real Pulp fantasy, Weird Tales sort of vibe. I kept thinking of Clark Ashton Smith and Edgar Rice Burroughs. I think this could be a very cool setting. I am looking forward to more tidbits coming down the pipe.
