ECL and XP Awards...

If a character has an Effective Character Level of 15 due to a +2 Level Adjustment from a template (so the original character has 13 class levels), does that mean he counts as a 15th-lvl character when calculating Effective Party Level for the purpose of XP calculation? Or does the ECL 15 only count when determining how much XP the character needs to gain a new level?

I'm not sure the above character actually started at 1st-level with the template; I think the just got it.

However, if he had started at 1st-level, and assuming the DM just gave them a standard amount of XP, the character started with the same amount as a Human Fighter 3 (generally speaking, 3,000xp).

The character gained the template at 13th-level, making him ECL 15. Because of this, he's basically not advancing in level for quite a while; not until he reaches what's needed for a 16th-lvl character. The flipside is that if he gets the template removed (which is possible in this case), he could potentially gain multiple levels all in one fell swoop if he's accumulated enough XP... :\

Technically, I don't think he can gain more than one level at a time. He would effectively drop to 1XP below 15th level (gaining 14th and most of the way to 15th). You can run it differently, however; I probably would since it seems like this is a special case (what, vampire?). IMO, though, in such known temporary changes, I'd just 'level' him without the template in consideration. It's easier in the long run and avoids an impossible situation, though it creates a more powerful PC for a little while.

True, but only while he has the template. If he lost the template, he'd drop back to ECL 13 but the XP he had been earning (which wasn't enough to get him to 16th level) could put him above the XP needed for 14th level. Or even 15th level, thus the level gain(s).

Just to be clear, if you START with an ECL, you START with the XP of your ECL, right?
