Methinks you misrepresent the Tolkien elves. You may be thinking of the Peter Jackson version.

But the [Elves] shall be the fairest of all earthly creatures; and they shall have and shall conceive and bring forth more beauty than all my children; and they shall have the greater bliss in this world.

Tolkien's descriptions of the qualities of the Elves were not so great as their deeds, though. The Noldor were complete badasses. Just read about Feanor and Fingolfin. Those guys were pimps, Feanor with words and craft, Fingolfin at war. And Maedhros who learned to fight better with his left hand after his right was cut off to escape shackles. Oh, and can't forget Ecthelion who slew Gothmog, Lord of Valaraukar (Balrogs) (I think he was Noldor, he might be Sindar). Actually, this pretty much holds true for all the Caliquendi (light elves) in their own way.

The only really awesome Atani in LotR was Aragorn and he's part Elven. Legolas ain't got nothing on those descended from Caliquendi.
