EN and forums are slow to load

Over the past two days, I have been experiencing periods in which accessing the site and various forum pages can take several minutes. I am not having this problem with other sites.
Is there work going on or higher than normal traffic to the site?

Twice got Gateway errors. Unfortunately, I can't recall if it was 504 or 540 timeout

We're getting attacked a *lot* in the form of thousands of spambots trying to register accounts. It comes and goes in wave, and we're fortunately in a robust enough position that the worst it does is slow us down (thanks to the Kickstarter). The upgrade a week ago also bolstered defences a little. But there's not much we can do to stop them *trying*.
