Enterprise 10-30-02

Golly Jee Wiss Bat Archer! We move the town 50 feet.
Then trick the Klingons to stand on the mindfield.
Oh the mine field will go off if distrupers are fired.
Don't worry 2 days of duck and dodge make you quicker than a klingon.
And no one not even the tact officer can shoot straight.
Oh the Klingon home command will do not claim them as members of their fleet.
So we going to shoot at the bad guys feet. Let them chase us around the town. Don't worry they warrior so they won't shoot us in the back.
Oh they warrior so they will walk not charge, not flank, up the hill and then follow the mass movement of the enemy and try to meet them as they come out of gully.
Lame.
Was a good episode until the plan when into action.

ONCE AGAIN WE CAN ONLY DRAW BLOOD WHEN OUR SHIP IS BEING INVADED.

They should have been Dryglutch and their heads beamed up. Leaving 5 warrior stuck in space with weapons which can't reach the surface.

Yeah, the conclusion was a bit lame. "Just stand up to the bully and they'll leave you alone." That's pretty simplistic.

What was missing here was any sense of pride in these Klingons. Klingons should have a strong sense of pride, whether they're honorable or not. Ooh, they're trapped in a ring of fire. But wait, they just beamed out of it. So, these Kingons were just humiliated and they turn and leave? They don't come back and attack out of spite?

These guys must have been humans in bad make-up.

And Malcolm is just as bad a shot as Worf (did he ever hit anything with a phaser in the series?). These Starfleet guys need to teach their security people how to use a phaser.

Silly, silly people :) It's quite obvious that the intent was to leave the klingons alive. The intent was to herd them to a spot and intimidate them, because klingons understand intimidation.

Not all klingons have pride. Duras and his sisters had no real pride to speak of. Worf's family nurse had lost hers. Kimpec, leader fo the Klingon High Council had only a little left himself...

I think you'll find that these supposedly sneaky, crafty klingons are represented in only a couple of TOS episodes, and one excellent book that was never considered canon. One individual here or there does not a race make.

Couldn't agree more. :)

On the subject of race, we agree again. Just like humans, not all Klingons are the same.

And I liked the episode. Not the season's strongest but still entertaining.

Okay, I agree that not ALL Klingons are full of pride. But Klingon bully marauders? I just didn't find the overall plan that impressive, or anything the least bit intimidating about how the miners had resisted. The miners shot at them, but never hit. There were a couple Klingons who got knocked down. And then they got herded into a ring of fire, which they proceeded to beam out of.

None of that would incline me in the slightest to stop taking deuterium from these miners. I would think that most bullies aren't going to run away if you give them a bloody nose, they're just going to hurt you more.

Like I said, it was the conclusion that I found unsatisfying. I didn't buy it. The rest of the episode was okay.

That's 'cause you aren't a klingon :)

These guys managed to take on a pack of klingon warriors, outmanuver and trap said klingons and force them to retreat, all without taking a single casualty. Maybe that'd be lost on you, but not on a klingon.

Now, that klingon has a choice - admit he was beaten, take his lumps and go elsewhere, or try again. If he tries again, there's the distinct possibility he'll lose, at which point he probably also loses his position on his ship, quite possibly his life, as a common mode of advancement on a klingon ship is kiling a weak superior officer.

A klingon can handle defeat. But going back to get your butt whooped a second time would be dumb :)

Nope, I still don't buy it.

First, Klingon warriors don't fear death, and have no qualms about killing. By those standards, they're more likely to see the "no casualty" thing as a sign of weakness, than a sign of superiority. OK, so you don't want to kill the Klingons. Why not stun them? Wound them? Singe their hair? Destroy their weapons?

And if this were the first time these Klingons had come to this colony, I'd be more inclined to agree with you. But these Klingons have been crushing these people for five years now. They've taken their measure. They've kicked these miners' butts for years, and they're not going to start fearing them now, based on what measly resistance I saw.

And who says I'm not a Klingon?

There was that DS9 episode where they timetraveled back to the "Trouble with Tribbles" episode. Well, when asked by Dax about the change in Klingon appearance Worf simply said "it is the result of something in our past that we do not like to talk about"

So, either that was just a meta joke or they hope (if not already) have some vague idea of what sort of thing actually caused it.

I've seen quotes from the writers to the effect that it was a meta joke, not a major historical revelation. The writers were so tired of hearing about it from detail-obsessed fans that they joked about it on the show.

I suppose it was plausible but I think at least one of the miners would have been pissed off from losing 40 of his friends a few years ago. My worst fears went unrealized, actually, as I had a sneaking suspicion they were prepared to take the orphan kid along with them (or have him stowaway on Enterprise!) Thank the Gods they didn't go that route!

Anyway, what was the name of the race of the miners? I don't recall them mentioning it...

Hmmm... Can't imagine why... ;) :D
