Favorite and Least Favorite 4th Edition Elements

Least favorite: Easily D&D Insider.
You know, now that I think about it, I think I detest D&D Insider more than the demonic saturation of the 4E game. Good call.

On the other hand, the two might be...related...

I'm going to stick to things I actually know about, rather than what I'm speculating about. There's a lot of stuff I like, but there's a couple of things that feel like WotC bugged my house to find out my D&D wish-list. And a couple that just bug...

Favorite (2-way tie):

1. Basically dumping the tired old pseudo-Vancian magic system.
2. More emphasis on intrinsic powers for characters and less emphasis on their gear.

Least Favorite (2-way tie):

1. There's been some indication that the game will move even more towards flashy, superheroic, almost X-Men style flavor (short-range teleports and the like). I prefer my epic fantasy to be a little more grounded in "the real world" (i.e. more Lord of the Rings and less Eragon).
2. They've kept the arcane/divine spell divide, which I hate. But I concede that it's a longtime trope of D&D.

I'm hopeful that I'll be able to houserule away the things that bug me. For example, with the option of non-divine healing, I might be able to design a world where gods don't interfere and priests don't cast spells.

I guess I just hate clerics...

Favorite: It's the opportunity for something new and improved, it could refine the game as well as the jump from 2nd to 3rd.

Least Favorite: The little preview snippets invoke speculation and rumors and don't give a good opportunity to judge if a change is good or bad.

The Good: Woo Hoo! New books!

The Bad: Awww crap, new books?

Seriously?

The good: Retooling the magic system and magic items. I've never fully liked the vancian system, so it'll be nice to see some change to that.

The bad: The Wait. I'm not a patient person by nature, and having to wait 9 months for 4e is making me sad.

Favorite: Saving throws don't inflate with character level.

Least Favorite: The game seems to be becoming more over-the-top and wacky. I liked the nice, down-to-earth levels 1 -3. I don't want to play superheroes or epic-ness. I want to see people clawing their way up to be able to afford chain armor, and regarding magic with wonder, let alone actually possessing more than a single magic item.

I was going to pick this one too, but I'm actually a little skeptical about how far away from Vance's idea of magic the new system will be. If it's sufficiently uh... un-Vancian , I'll be a happy guy. This would be a HUGE change in philosophy for D&D. I suppose I'm not expecting that big of a leap when you're working with a proven system.

Well, despite what people think, it is not gone. It still exists, in all it's 30-year old D&D splendor. However, it only seems to apply to the per-day abilities of the wizard (spells), and nothing else.

Pro The Roles allowing me to take a solid team, specialize each of them, and still not gimp their primary duty in party composition.

Con After a bit of thought, the shift for martial classing smacks of Iron Heroes (which was a fine game mind you), and it hints that some of the more mystic and strangely beautiful magics of old will be gone or heavily altered. I might like it, but it is worrisome.

Pro: Faster gameplay and DM prep.

Con: Flashy per day/per encounter/at will powers for everyone. I'd prefer if 4E supported different playstyles.

Difficult to say until we have more concrete information. However,

Favourite: Per day/ per encounter/ at will resources for all the classes.

Con: My two favourite 3.5 core classes? Sorcerers and Druids. :-( That, and the current lack of detail.
