favorite D&D character concept

Well, I like and have played most everything. But I always lean more toward Ranger. And Ranger-fighter. I rarely stray from the good ol phb for my characters except for a few feats, prestige classes, and such. In order I like. Ranger. Ranger-fighter. Barbarian. Cleric. The only thing i've never been fond of really is Druid. Nothing against it. But I dont care for it. I'm all for versatility and being a caster and a fighter. But depending on the Dm. I prefer to stay within my class.

Skill monkey for me. Diplomat. Bardic Knowledge. I don't care if i ever get in a melee. I could spend all my time in town, or shielding the magic user, for all i care. I like to force the good rumors from the dm. It's a way to control the campaign, if not the battlefield.
300 skill points, that's my goal. And I LOVE TO HIDE MY ALIGNMENT, and my 'abilities'. 23 ranks to bluff, diplomacy and disquise, among others. With synergies, and "X to Y" bonuses etc you can reach 540 total skill points without cheating.

Take 23 ranks in your 8 favorite skills, and then 8 ranks +(6x2=12)= 20 in 15 other skills. Throw in an Exemplar dip, and Able Learner feat, and your an information magnet/skill virtuoso.

With a name like Havoc... you better be.[/QUOTE]

that was actually one of my first characters name. he was an ogre barbarian with a greataxe and lots of power to use it.

I guess I don't know what I like best. A bit of everything.

My four all-time favorite characters were:
1) Gilladian - a stooopid dwarf fighter. His best friend was always his pet "mule go bang", who kicked in doors for him.

2) Thorntwist - an elvish bard who once stripteased a giant while the rest of the party spiked the giant clan's stew with poisoned mushrooms.

3) Buttercup - the halfling rogue/shadowdancer who was a "mafia princess" until her family was murdered and her "uncle ogre" recruited her to a life of crime.

4) Charity - the half-orc cleric I'm currently running. Very pious and very handy with a mace. Thwack - "blessed is Pelor!" Thwack - thwack!

I don't like pure spellcasters - I'm usually the DM and have to run a lot of them as villains, plus I get tired of their complexity... and I don't like the really over-the-top alternate classes - gimme a good basic rogue or fighter or bard, and I'm a happy camper.

For me, my favorites are anything I can strongly tie to dragons. I tend to prefer playing martial characters, simply because I don't like the complexity of the average full caster.

That said, I love Incarnum. And Soul Binding. And Shadow Magic. Go figure... ;)

I'm definitely going to chime in with the versatility crowd, and also the support bit. I like being able to do a lot of stuff, and help other people do a lot of stuff.

My own favorite character concept is of casters and of an all caster party: druid, cleric, wizard and artificer.

When I am DMing, I toy around with other character concepts that I wouldn't necessarily choose as a player. As a player I have a tendency to play humans so when I am the DM I can try different races and classes and also lower tier classes which I wouldn't necessarily play as a player.

An example is a pirate that I made, Georgina Hope Odom, (CE female water genasi rogue 3) who was the captain of the ship the Dreaming Knave and who ran a smuggling operation between Sharn and Stormreach.

I actually like the complexity of the full caster, I also like all the options which a caster has.

Other than the fact that I rarely play arcane casters or humans, there is not one specific type I like. Rather, I like to take an existing class and specialize in something odd and flavorful, but still reasonably effective.

Right now, I have a Thri-Kreen monk that can jump like you have never seen. He jumped off the top of a two story building through a manhole (it was open) and into the sewers... and lived to tell the tale.

I like to play rogues. Can't stand playing tanks. Give me the guy who finds out ahead of time what we are going to run into later and doesn't get caught in the traps. I need to infiltrate and always have a back door to slip out of. Having a wizard dip always helps.

As long as the character has a decent concept, and role-playability, I can usually get behind it regardless of the class.
My "perfect" character is a Paladin, though. It was my second class, ever, and the one that stuck around the longest.
Although many people feel Paladins to be wimps, I ALWAYS runb them as the 1ed Paladins with the code of honor, and the various things that make them difficult for most people to run properly or well.
I usually create Paladins that Always charge to the front to defeat the evil in the world, yet is willing to NOT charge if the case calls for it (a neutral encounter). My Paladins will always keep their word, and will ALWAYS be the last one off the field of battle. If a character goes down, then Pally will stand over the top of him/her and fight off any non-party that threatens to come near... plus, I occasionally make them slightly arrogant, just to really piss people off.

Basically, Chuck Norris, mixed with John Wayne, mixed with Pope John Paul II.

Of course, that was all good until I had a DM force me to work with a few devils to stave off a demon attack. I was pissed off, yet it was so artfully done, and logical that playing it out was definitely worth the atonement punishment.
