Elves,
Especially Noldor specifically Feanor's sons. Horrifyingly focused on regaining their birthright, the Silmarils, willing to slaughter, cheat, steal, kill for what is rightfully theirs. I can identify with that. Vicious implacable foes to Melkor and always on the front line against the Enemy.
Those are elves I can get behind.
Fingolfin Feanor's brother cuts the leg off of Satan (well Morgoth), Feanor dies in battle with the mightiest Balrog. The Elves of Beleriand do battle with the forces of Angband hold the genocidal hordes of Morgoth at bay while the Dwarves of Beleriand sit in darkness and envy them.
In AD&D and BD&D Elves were masters of the Sword and Magic Dwarves were dull.
Melniboneans are Elves just really jaded, demon summoning drug addicted elves.
