Feat per level

For my high-powered campaign I am thinking of having the following:
All PCs gain a feat per level
Fighters gain an additional feat per level

Why? To make feats less valuable. Characters are 'dipping' into fighter for a level or two to gain the feats necessary for a certain chain or PrC. PrCs would still be limited by level, but characters can obtain their chain without the need for fighter levels.

The thought is to also provide fighters with a broader range of feats instead of trying to plan them out starting at 1st level. Since I am limiting it to the SRD, all other characters would have the chance to add some extras in saves, skills, or HP.

Have you tried it? Thoughts, concerns, advice?

I would not recommend a feat per level. I've done this for my latest campaign and am regretting it. I don't think a feat every two levels would be bad however.

Powergamers eat this up. I thought they'd mix in some less optimized "flavor" feats, but it really didn't work that way.

Also, you'll have to adjust some feats that get better the more feats you have, like the x heritage feats and Mind Over Body.

In my current campaign, I am giving the PCs a feat each level and it is working just great. The Psion with Mind over Body has crazy hit points (at 6th level), but otherwise there seems to be no problems. I will probably make it standard in my campaigns from now on.

Not sure about those being in the SRD (perhaps in the Unearthed Arcana, or on the Psionics...)

I would think it works better in lower level games. Its one of the tweaks I've considered because my group tends to concentrate on the first 10 levels. I thought about using it in the swashbuckler game I'm starting up on Sunday, but ultimately I went another route. Personally, I kind of like it when people dip into other classes for feats or abilities.

Why are you finding this a problem? Multiclassing can be good.

I played in a game with feat/2 lvls ... it was only a summer thing, so our DM kinda wanted us to move along a bit more. Didn't see a problem with it, especially b/c we weren't min/maxing but playing for fun and coolness

Well, as always with offering more options to the players, there's a level of trust between DM and Player about not abusing that which is given. Of course, that level of trust varies wildly by group.

What we do is ban certain books until a certain level is reached. For instance here are the feat rules for a recent campaign:

Feats
Based on the characters level, players will be allowed to choose from the following source material at creation and advancement.
  • 1st level - Players Handbook I, Players Handbook II
  • 4th level - Savage Species and the Complete: Adventurer, Arcane, Divine, and Warrior
  • 8th level - Libris Mortis and Lords of Madness
  • 15th level - Book of Exalted Deeds and Book of Vile Darkness
