D&D 5E Fighters are amazing!

It's illogical. PCs will go adventuring anyway and magic items are only as special as the DM presents them and the players view them.

Actually, the design of 5e makes magic items special. A lot of work needs to be done by the DM to make them mundane again.

Magic items would certainly be sold, or traded. But they would be special events.

It might take the form of a special auction. Low level PCs could be hired as guards/investigators to keep it safe. High level PCs might need to secure an invitation.

A magic item may be given as a boon. It might even represent a title or land ownership.

Maybe there are rumours of someone who found a powerful magic item in their house and, being a poor peasant, want to unload it to become wealthy. They are secretive though because they don't want it stolen. Factions are racing against the clock to find out who they are and where it is.

The propability on the random treasure tables and the items handed out in the official adventures disagree with that

How so?

In order to make magic items mundane again the DM needs to not only give out way more than the treasure tables suggest but also make encounters more difficult to compensate.

That is a lot of work.

The basic math of 5e assumes no magic items. When the characters get magic items they become better than their level would indicate.

That makes magic items special.

Making them mundane would be to just arbitrarily increase the difficulty of enemies to compensate.

For instance, everyone has a +3 suit of armour? Well now all enemies get another +3 to hit. That makes magic items mundane. Like it was in 3.x

What kind of results have you had with the random treasure tables? I usually only roll up potions and stuff, at least until you start getting to lair treasures from big bad long-lived creatures like vampires.
