Actually the keen rapier never gets critical threat, non does it do any damage. Open your DMGs to page 185, table 8-15. Now, look at Keen, notice the marking next to it indicating there is a note about keen. Now, look at the bottom of the table and you will see by that mark these words,k and I quote: "slashing weapons only. Reroll if randomly generated for a non-slashing weapon. Now, take out you PHBs, and turn them to page 98, table 7-4. Under medium size marital weapons-melee look at the entry for rapier. Notice the type is PIERCING. Therefore you cannot have a keen rapier. Sorry min/maxers, go bark up another tree for your uber weapon.

Now open your web browser. Go to http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/DMGErrata.pdf

and search until you see the following text:
"p.187, (keen weapon description)
CHANGE the second sentence to: Only piercing or slashing weapons can be enchanted to be keen."

Therefore, keen your rapier all you'd like. And praetorian, this is an extreme example. Calm down.

You could always use a scimitar instead... Identical stats, only the scimitar is a slasher.

Or use a Falchion and get the extra damage of a two-handed weapon.

And don't forget the kukris for the small characters, and those who like concealable weapons.

Calm down and read the errata. (See what Drew posted, he beat me to it).
I was going to fill the rest of this post with a parody of the "Sorry min/maxers, go bark up another tree for your uber weapon" comment, but I think it's better just to say this: Always read the errata first, and don't get so worked up.

Funniest thing is, this exact same thing can be duplicated with the scimitar, since the only difference (stat-wise) between it and the rapier is Slashing vs Piercing and non-finessable vs finessable.

all i wanna say is 2d6 whoopdeedoo! ;)

jake

Well, you also double your strength bonus to damage, and any other bonuses you have to the roll. That should add up to alot more than 2d6 for most fighters.

Improved Critical, Keen, and Keenblade (Dragonstar) increase the threat range of a weapon by the original threat range. A rapier's threat range is 18, 19, 20; three numbers. A longsword's threat range is 19, 20; two numbers. Improved critical would increase a rapier's threat by 3, or a longsword's by two.

Ki Improved Critical grants the improved critical feat or improves the weapon's threat by 2.

Rapier = 18-20
Keep Rapier = 15-20
Improved Crit with Keen Rapier = 12-20
Weapon Master with Improved Crit and Keen Rapier = 9-20

er ... pardon the ignorance but,
where's Weapon Master from?
