D&D 5E Fledgling DM seeking suggestions for Evil-aligned dead god/demigod

I'm having an idea for a campaign (set in Faerun because just easier) that I am attempting to write where a LG monk is guarding a relic imbued with the spirit of a dead god/demigod - which turns out to be perhaps not quite as dead as previously thought.

Continued exposure to said relic influences the monk so his personality splits 2 for 1 - the LG monk is unaware of the split, and merely begins to notice episodes of blackouts and lost time; the split personality is LE, has slightly different stats, can understand language commonly used by said deity, and basically is now driven to returning deity to power, while remaining undetected as long as possible by rest of party.

What I need is a deity. Not concerned about by-the-book so much, as am happy to flex the rules to fit the story. But I'm drawing a blank and can't really discuss this with any of my D&D playing friends as they're all the players :/

Any ideas?

Have a look at named devels, fiends or daemons for inspiration. You could always rename and/or realign as required.

You could have their current abilities as is due to their "dead" status and add some extra ones as it grows in power and converts followers. It should be easy to add feats or epic boons to just about anything to represent more powerful versions of it.

Hope that helps

There have been several gods (both evil and good) that have died in Faerun over the centuries. Taking a google search produces one that might work for you, because his story already includes his essence being inside an artifact. That would be Myrkul, the former God of the Dead. He died during the Time of Troubles, but a part of his essence found its way into an artifact called the Crown of Horns. Here are a couple articles from the Forgotten Realms wiki that detail things.

The granddaddy of evil dead gods is Vecna. You could also run with a powerful lich like Azalin or Acererak.

Given your description, a Lovecraftian entity like Nyarlathotep, Hastur, or even Great Cthulhu could work too, since you seem to be dealing with madness as much or more than straight evil.

Bob, the many faceted (well, 9 facets to be exact....). Bob hails from some of our sillier campaigns.
In his unified form he represents all alignments. Some followers adhere to neutrality to best represent this. Others worship 1 of his alignents.
Witch faction they follow is revealed by how they capitalize various letters of his name & wether or not any are written upside down.
Anyways, for reasons never revealed Bob was imprisoned in a door. For many years this holy artifact resided in the temple. Until one day it was stolen. Many quests have been undertaken to recover it, either for the church as a whole or for various factions.
Your monk is guarding this door & being oddly effected by it....

If playing 5e-era FR I believe Myrkul is already back/restored but not as powerful as he once was given that Kelemvor still rules the dead. But yeah, good choice.
