For Those Who Go Way Back, What Monster Have You Never Used?

I am not a fan of ugly stuff like oozes and most aberrations, but neverthless I have indeed used some of them (usually because they were in published adventures).

There is actually a lot of creatures from 3ed MM which I haven't used yet, but the reason is basically that I haven't yet DMed enough ;) and also I haven't DMed very high-levels campaigns. Some very high CR creatures (titans, elder dragons) have appeared in my setting, but not in combat against the PC!

Just to name a few of the ones which never had a spot in my campaigns and probably will never have:

Aboleth
Aranea
Delver
Devourer
Digester
Kraken
Locathah
Phantom Fungus
Phasm
Skum
Spider Eater
Thoqqua
Tojanida
Vargouille

Some because they are lame, some others because I just don't get the sense of them. Many are acquatic ones which makes them more difficult to use. Finally I think doppelgangers already cover the shapeshifting role and I don't need more.

Does the Tarrasque count?

AFAIAC, it's an excuse to give a munchkin a hard time. And follow on adoration and plots around the thing have only firmed up my resolve never to use this bland death-dealer in my game.

Of the new wierd creatures in 3e, I have only used the arrowhawk. The delver, ythrak, digester, tojanida... never had a reason or desire to use them.

Almost every other MM creature I have used or would use. Especially the abberations. (See avatar. ;) )

Wow, there's more I've never used than there are ones I have used. I don't like a lot of the "older" monsters unless they're truly classic(al) and iconic of fantasy. The "D&Dism" monsters don't do much for me, including, for example, most of the aberrations.

For me it was the pseudo undead. WTF? Gygax must have had one too many shots of absinthe before writing that one up.

Which "pseudo-undead" are these? I'm afraid I don't remember where they came from.

For me, I've never used a HOST of monsters. I've never used:

Cloakers
Ixititxachitl
Tiraphegs
Grippli
Flumphs
Tweens
Meenlocks
bookas
Osquips
Ogrillons
Leucrotta
Lamia
Lammasu
Androsphinx
Achaierai
Aranea
Arrowhawk
Azer
Belker
Bralani
Couatl
Delver
Devourer
Gaehle
Nighthags
Howlers
Inevitables
Leonals
Krenshar
Lillends
Phasm
Sea Cat
Shocker Lizard
Skum
Tojanida
Yrthaks
Yeth Hounds
None of the Modrons

And the list goes on, but that's ones off the top of my head, plus the ones from the MM.

There's a lot that I haven't used yet (I don't even think I've used a shambling mound yet, and I know I haven't used a treant or a tojanda).

But I *sorta* used a Tarrasque once. It was more an excuse to keep the city guard and other (NPC) heroes busy and away from the main plotline. So I used it, but not against the party. :D

Maybe I'll make a list of things I have never used and see if I can work them into my next campaign. Of course, my players will think I lost my mind, but I can live with that.

From the 1e MM2... they are lil dudes who look like undead, but aren't. Pseudo-ghoul or whatever.

Yeah, whatever is right! :p

Okay, well, I guess you can add that to my list.

As long as we are speaking of (1e) MM2 sillines, jot down minimals.

Amazingly, in 24 years of gaming, I've never used Yuan-Ti. They just never fit with what I was doing as a DM.

I'm gonna start making up for that one soon...
