For Those Who Go Way Back, What Monster Have You Never Used?

Hmm, most of my not used monsters have been mentioned, but I have also never used the Tarasque (hey, an unique monster that only appears once in awhile- never did see how to get this into a campaign.) Others include the al' miraj, the orc hybrids published in Dragon (don't even think to ask me which issue!) and most of the Fiend Folio.

I've only used green, black, and greyhawk dragons that I can remember.

From the red box basic set I could start from the very beginning, never used an ape, white.

I've never used a roper.

Only green slime out of the various oozes, slimes, cubes, and puddings. I've never faced anything like that except green slime either in a game.

I've never used a beholder, yuan ti, kuo toa, or displacer beast although I have used carrion crawlers, mind flayers, and had a slaad encounter ready even though the party didn't hit it. That takes care of the WotC IP monsters held out of the srd.

Let me think back to the 1e MM, hmm, I don't think I've used any dinosaurs, although I might have, its been over 20 years now.

Don't believe I've ever used or been in an encounter (as a player) with any of the monsters mentioned by Henry and Li Shenron.

Have steered clear of animals, have never used Yuan-Ti, never was into Dinosaurs (though a friend was). And I have absolutely no idea what a Modron is - have never seen it in a game, have never seen it in a book.

Modrons are flatworld meets D&D. LN outsiders based on symmetric geometric shapes. More complex shapes = More HD. Originally from MMII for 1e.

Hmmm..

Never used gorgons (as in big brass bulls) or manticoras or chimeras or sea monsters or nixies or ochre jellies...

[now more sensibly moves onto MM]

Never used...

Aboleth, Achaierai, Allip, Ankheg, Aranea, Arrowhawk, Athach, Azer, Behir, Beholder, Belker, Blink Dog, Bodak, Bulette, Celestials, Chaos Beast, Chimera, Choker, Chuul, Couatl, Darkmantle, Delver, Demons, Destrachan, Devils, Devourer, Digester, Displacer Beast, Dragonne, Drider, Ethereal Filcher, Ethereal Marauder, Formians, Forst Worm (never had a game in an appropriate enviroment, but would use it), Fungi, Gibbering Mouther, Girallon, Gorgon (...still...), Grey Render, Grick, Grimlock, Howler, Krenshar, Kuo-toa, Lamia (utterly different vision of what a Lamia is...), Lillend, Locathah, Magnim, Manticore (but might someday), Mephits, Mimic, Mind Flayer, Mohrg, Oozes, Otyugh, Owlbear, Phantom Fungus, Phase Spider, Phasm, Planetouched, Pseudodragon, Rakshasa, Rast, Ravid, Remorhaz, Roper, Rust Monster, Sahuagin, Sea Lion (but might someday), Shadow Mastiff, Shield Guardian, Shocker Lizard, Skum, Slaad (of any variety), Spider Eater, Sprites, Tarrasque, Tendriculous, Thoqqua, Tojanida, Umber Hulk, Vampire Spawn, Vargouille, Winter Wolf, Xill, Xorn, Yeth Hound, Yrthak, Yuan-Ti

Monster Manuals are a terrible investment for me...

OTOH, I have made up dozens of setting-appropriate (i.e. to my own campaigns) creatures and used several from the Creature Collections.

Overall, I find many of the monsters ... well, silly...

I've never used most of them. I tend to use humanoid races primarily, animals/vermin/dire animals and also undead occasionally, and mythical creatures for the rest (demons, devils, dragons, sure. But also monsters with names people recognize that I can turn into THE chimera - not *a* chimera. For example.

Man, I know I'm gonna take some flak for this. I don't ever recall using a red dragon. :o

Well, I've been playing for 20 years and I've never used any dragon of any color, except for the wyrmling in Sunless Citadel. I always figured that an encounter with an adult (or even near adult) dragon should be really climactic and most of my campaigns never made it past about 7th level. Buy my current game is at 7th level now and there is a black dragon in the immediate future.

Frankly, there's plenty of other monsters that I've never used as well, including some of the D&D staples such as beholders and mind flayers, though the flayers also may be making an appearance soon.
