Forked Thread: Scotley's Tomb of Horrors 3.5 Continued

After opening the secret door and then hearing people still interested in the room, Jillian moves back into the it. "Well then! Can the vats be turned over? That way whatever is inside can just pour out."

OOC: The vats are are 7 feet in diameter and 4 feet deep. They are all about half full of murky liquid. So rough calculation gives a volume of 575 gallons which weights about 4800 pounds (or 2180 kilos) plus the weight of the vat itself. A concentrated effort by the group should be able to lift 2562 pounds. That's more than half, so I'll say that yes, if everyone puts down weapons and shields and lifts you can tip it up and pour out the contents. These sorts of physics exercises seemed to come up all the time back in our 1st edition games, but rarely anymore. Sort of a flashback moment for me. I can clearly see the old gang hunched over our big 80's era scientific calculators. The internet sure as hell makes looking up the formulas and conversions easier. :)

OOC - is there just some kind of drain nozzle or cork toward the bottom for draining these things? Is there a drain or slope to the floor, or would draining/tipping these over mean we'd be standing knee deep in acidic sludge? Is there some kind of long handled strainer laying around in here somewhere to fish around in the vats without emptying them?

No significant drains, plugs or slopes are noted suggesting the wizard used magical means to empty the vats. There are a few items about that could be used to probe the depths, though none has a good net or basket for scooping up what you find.

OOC: You are correct. The room is also big enough that any vats you empty won't cause too much of a hazard.

But didn't you guys get all magiced up to resist acid before you came in here? Just dive in and get the loot.

Perhaps he may be crazy, but not stupid. the fighter grabs a pole or stick or someything and probes and swirls around in the first vat to see if there was something in it. He removes it after about half a minute to see if it has been eaten by the contents of the vat.

The first vat appears to contain only dirty water. Harrison can find nothing solid in the vat. No harm seems to come to the stick, a fine piece of oak that might have been slated for use as a wizards' staff someday.

Harrison finds something in this vat. It is hard and oblong, but he can't fish it out with the staff. The end of the staff is suffering considerably from being poked into what appears to be acid. At least that's your best guess from the sharp vinegary smell and the damage done to the wood.
