From The Shadows (A Ravenloft Campaign)

Varren D'Cor Only:
[sblock]Anja leads you within the brightly painted vardo. Its interior is small and dimly lit. A small candle flickers on a short table near the wagon's center. Everything this woman owns clutters the walls, floor, shelves, and the tiny bed opposite you.

She clears an empty scabbard from one of the stools at the table and motions for you to sit. She sits on the stool across the table from you and lays the wooden box on the table. She opens it gently and removes a set of wooden tiles wrapped in dark blue silk.

"It is important that you hold the cards and concentrate. Think of yourself, your past, and the questions whose answers you seek."

She places the cards in your hands and holds them together. "Focus your spirit. Free it from its bindings within your body and allow it to wander its past and its future and its present."

The world around you seems to fade into nothingness. All you can sense is Anja's presence, somehow holding you, comforting you, and protecting you from the cold void around you. Her breathy voice warms your very being. "Keep your eyes closed, and draw forth five cards."

You feel your body move, almost without your permission, drawing the five requested wooden tiles. Anja takes them from your hand, and touches your closed eyes. "Awaken and view the world without time."

She takes the first card you drew and turns it over. "This card represents you. This is your true self, that which cannot be hidden."

The card depicts a young man standing, his arms raised above his head, holding a blazing sword that glows blue with electricity. His armor drips with blood, but his handsome face is triumphant. Sprawled on the ground around him are many foes, including the undead and other monsters. A raven sits perched on one of the bodies, a gobbet of flesh in its beak.

"Ahh, The Avenger. A good, strong card...You are a true warrior, a man who seeks to right wrongs and deal swift vengance to your enemies. You are haunted by your past, and you quest to grant it peace."[/sblock]

[sblock]She is speaking to me... but not to me.

No, she is speaking to the “me” I left behind. Who is this woman? Card tricks cannot tell her that much!

Varren’s mind was racing and his pulse pounding, but slowly he tried to rein it all in.

Simple coincidence. That’s all. I’m sure that reading could apply to everyone… Yea, I’m doing the hard work filling in the details. That has to be it. I bet the next card tells me I’ll be rich and famous or some such. There was an old woman who did such things with locals at the inn before we had to burn the inn …

Oh god, I don’t want to think about it, moving on… Distraction!

With a heavy swallow, “Simple enough, please continue Anja”[/sblock]

Varren D'Cor only:
[sblock]Anja draws forth the second card and turns it over slowly. "This card is your past. Its influence can be felt in every aspect of your present and future."

This card depicts a graveyard in the dead of night. A cracked tombstone stands beneath an ancient and twisted oak tree. From the grave, a ghostly spirit arrises, its face twisted in pain.

"The Spirit card is very powerful, especially when representing your past. It warns of a return...a return of an ancient evil. A curse, perhapse? A forgotten foe? It is difficult to say. The next two cards may provide a clue to its identity."

All Other Players:
[sblock]
The fire is dying down, and the night is growing colder. Just as you're thinking about stoking the waning flame, a shrill scream pierces the night, followed by another, this one more panicked than the last.

[sblock]All players should make a Listen Check to determine the direction of the scream. Keep in mind, you should post your responces in sblock format ;)[/sblock]
[/sblock]

"By the bowels of Orcus..." begins Thadeus as the first scream hits the camp, but he quickly quiets at the second sound and looks about, trying hard to determine the general direction of the noise.

[sblock] Listen check roll is a 10 [/sblock]

Alexander, alarmed by the screams. "Look alive, men." Alexander realizes how ironic that might sound in this dark land. "For if there is evil afoot, then surely they shall fall to the goodness of our blades." Alexander starts to utter a prayer outloud, as he draws his longsword and shield.

"Heironious protect your faithful followers, and their companions. Work through me, O great lord of valor. Allow me to shelter those that dwell in this valley of darkness. For I am truly, my brethren's keeper, and finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brethren" he pauses, and turns his attention to what might be causing such screams, uttering to himself. "Do not make me destroy you."

[sblock] Listen check gets a 16[/sblock]

[sblock]Varren simply stares at the card for a moment. He realizies this is no game. No coincidence. He see's his past as it rolls out before his eyes. The next cards will evidently be the present and future, he thinks. I wonder what the third card is. Do I want to know?

No.

Do I have a choice?

No.

It's better to pull the arrow straight through the wound instead of leaving it there to fester.

"Please continue" [/sblock]

Varren Only:
[SBLOCK]The candle's light begins to fade slightly as it nears the end of its wick. Anja places the next card face up on the table next to the other two.

"Ahhhh, the Four of Stars...the Abjurer."

An elderly Vistana looks deep within a flawless crystal ball on this card's face. Four stars light the interior of the ball, illuminating her face and hands, as well as the darkness around her.

"Those stars symbolize the Abjurer's true meaning: the search for knowledge, understanding, truth, and logic. This is a warning against assumptions and hasty judgements. You must sort through your confusion to survive."[/sblock]

Other Players:
[sblock]The screams originated somewhere beyond the clearing, but only Alexander's sharp ears tell him the general location.[/sblock]

Alexander will move slowly towards the origin of the screams, sword and shield ready.

"This way compatriots. If evil is afoot, then let us show it our mettle." Alexander commands.

[sblock] Why didn't I just stay at the camp fire. Then I could just relax with the other lost travelers and enjoy the night.

Oh well. Pull the arrow through Varren, pull it through. It won't be bad if you just get it over with...

"Next card please" [/sblock]
