how does gaming affect your eating habits?

On weekends when I game its almost exclusively fast food, though occasionally sashimi gets fit in there when budget allows for it and the mood strikes and the whole group goes out on a lark. Then during the week I atone by hitting the gym five nights in a row for at least an hour. :D

Well, last night was game night, and I think we did ok, health-wise.

We cooked out on the grill (hot dogs, hamburgers) before the game, and when I got the urge to snack during the game, I busted out a bowl of grapes.

One guy opted for Dorritos, but I was surprised how much everyone else liked the grapes.

Also, in an effort to improve our health, I've switched from 7 gallons of Coke a game to diet soda and water. But Coke is still there in the fridge for the other players.

On the other hand, if I am going to drink a can of Coke, it's most likely to happen on game night. Sometimes, I just go nuts! :)

We are at a strange point in history where high calorie foods, sugar and fat, can be manufactured more cheaply than other types of food. Our physiology craves these substances because this high energy was, in the past, not as common and thus a very valuable source of energy. Convenience food relies on being not only readily available and easy to prepare, but also high in cheap energy and addictive to the consumer. Foods high in fat and sugar meet every criteria needed for maximum profit and consumer demand. Massive segments of the food industry revolve around this principle because it's the most profitable way to make and sell food.

My untested suggestion as to why healthy food is harder to prepare is that people who want more healthy food are a different demographic that has consciously made a decision to look for higher quality food, and quick, cheap, convenience foods just don't fit the bill. If you thaw it in the microwave it will taste like !*$& compared to what you can make from scratch. Ever since I started learning how to cook, I really don't like pre-packaged food, even if it's somewhat healthy.
