Well, congratulations and welcome to the neighborhood! Culinary, hospitality...?

From everything you're saying about jobs and money, it seems to me like you guys are working too hard to make ends meet for you to spend a lot of cash and half a week on something you unsure of, and where you may not get to see much of him anyway.

Send him off on his own. Save your money and work overtime that week. Then you can afford to take a few days off whatever job you get up here, and go see him when you'll have him all to yourself!

Carl

I'll be in hospitality as a transfer student, and my younger sister will be a freshman in culinary, so it will be nice to have her there, I guess.

He's working hard ot make ends meet, and I want to go up there knowing I will be okay if I don't get a job besides for work study right away, and to spend the week together (more or less because he wants to get there a day early andleave a day later) if I might not seem him a lot, it might not pay for me, but he still wants me to go, so I don't know right now at all. One opition that I am thinking about is flying in Friday ngiht and leaving with him on Monday so I only have to take one day off of work.

They're tough programs, but I guess that's what gives them their reputation. My wife's been cooking in a small cafe downtown where a culinary student was interning last semester. She told us stories of morning dress inspections in sharply starched chef's uniforms, eight-hour days in "lab" (kitchen) -- but she loved it...

Providence is a cool town. If you need any local info, don't hesitate to pm or email.

Well, the good news for you -- in the wake of this thread -- is that, if you do go, there will a few thousand people hounding Art to make sure you have a good time.

I sent my sister what you said about the culinary student to give her an idea of what she was in for. I'm sure I'll PM/e-mail you at some point asking for advice and tips, thanxs for the offer.

As for Gen Con, I'm really consdering taking a flight Friday morning/afternoon so I'll be there for the Ennies, and then come home with Arthur on Monday.

If you're so strapped for cash that you're worried about not having enough money when you go to school if you don't get a job right away, I think it's pretty damn stupid to buy a plane ticket to go to a convention you don't even want to attend. Just my opinion, of course, but my opinions are usually pretty great.

now that I know there is a minor league team around there, I'll look into it, and if they are in town it's a way for me to get away. (I'm a huge baseball fan).

The Indianapolis Indians play at home every day during Gen Con (Durham Bulls on Thursday, Scranton Red Barons Friday-Sunday).
Victory Field is just west of the convention center. If you like football, the Colts have a home pre-season game against the Bears Saturday night.

There's a three story mall attached to the convention center, and tons of restaurants downtown. The Indiana capitol building and many museums are easy walking distance, with many more a short drive away. As a life-long resident of Indy, I'd be happy to answer any specific questions about town.

My wife went with me to Gen Con one day two years ago and every day last year. She doesn't game much, but she enjoyed speed painting minutures and meeting some of her favorite fantasy authors.

I checked out the Indians scheduel already, I do want to go to at least one game if I do go. I can't stand football, but the WNBA team will be home for a game on Sat and I think one on Wen or Thursday (Arthur is planning on getting there a day early).

Thanxs for the help :)

My wife goes to Gen Con with me and she doesn't game. In fact she brings our one and a half year old son too. Of course we live out in the country and she enjoys her few days in the city where everything is in walking distance. This year I think she has plans for the zoo, some of the parks, the mall and a little time at the convention itself. She does like to paint minis occasionally and is hoping to get some time for that. She had a great time last year.

There's a zoo? That could be fun!

It's supposed to be a pretty nice one from what I hear. Indianapolis is a pretty nice downtown with a fair amount of things in walking distance. But as someone said, with you being from New York City I am quite sure Indianapolis will seem pale in comparison! :)

When Gen Con gets closer I will probably post here on behalf of my wife to see what other gamer wives or SO's want to get together to do something outside the convention.
