Gimli

First Post
Dwarven Fighter

1. Weapon Focus (Great axe), Power attack
2. Cleave
3.Great Cleave
4. Weapon Spec.
5.-
6. Improved Toughness, Improved Sunder

That's what he's got IMC so far (his name's actually Regnar, not Gimli :) ) What should he continue to take? He looked around for prclasses and didn't really find one that fit the exact bill.

8. Imp. Bull Rush?
9. Combat Brute?

Thanks,

He's got Great Cleave? Thats not wise my friend. Consider how rarely Cleave comes into play .. Great Cleave is used like 1/10th of that. Very rarely, IME.

Having said that, I don't know what combat brute does, so I'd suggest Improved Critical at 9th level.

From just the PHB, a couple of my favorites for a fighter:

1) Iron Will - that area's the one big Achilles heel for any fighter

2) Quick Draw - very useful when you have the multiple attacks

If he's looking to mimic Gimli's performance from the films, though, think to Aragorn and Gimli on the ramp at Helm's Deep. There was some pretty Great Cleaving going on there... :)

Though I haven't played with it, Combat Brute looks like a great feat for characters who have sunder. Like Improved Trip, it allows characters who formerly had to choose between destroying their foe's weapon and destroying their foe to both have their cake and eat it by destroying the weapon and then destroying the foe.

Combat Brute is where?

Gimli in the movie had TWF and possibly PBS for his throwing axes as well ;)

About Great Cleave: Look at some nice basher builds out there with the new improved 3.5 Power Attack(tm)!

Charging into the middle of 6+ enemies, drawing some puny AoOs and then Greatcleaving with 40+ damage on each... ah well, not everyone plays my style of campaigns it seems :D

From the "canon" WotC books

"Combat Brute" is a tactical feat from Complete Warrior. Nice, but specialised

"Combat reflexes" might be a fun feat (ok, some dex is needed - like 14- or more to enjoy it ) - followed up by "Hold the Line" (extremly nice when fighting with a companion close by ) . Should give lots of extra attacks - especially if charged. Slightly defensive, though.

"Improved critical" is good, but its mileage depends upon the opponents faced - if lots of undead, conbstructs etc get chopped, leave it be.

"Improved Power Attack" - more damage on soft skinned targets = better chance for cleave.

"Combat Expertise" can be good to fend of very high attack-bonus menaces like giants. Also gives access to useful follow up feats, but Int 13 is not a common stat on Fighters
