[sblock=going over or around the tree]Good question. I think the best mechanical match for this that I can find is the Hop Up action from the Jump skill: "You can jump up onto an object as tall as your waist, such as a table or small boulder, with a DC 10 Jump check. Doing so counts as 10 feet of movement, so if your speed is 30 feet, you could move 20 feet, then hop up onto a counter. You do not need to get a running start to hop up, so the DC is not doubled if you do not get a running start."

If you wanted to remain on top of the tree (and thus gain +1 to attack from higher ground) I'd want a balance check DC 5. Moving off of the tree would just take 5' of normal movement, no check needed. Moving from one tree square to another takes 10' of movement.

Thus, William could move 5', jump up on the tree with a DC 10 jump check and costing 10 feet of movement, move one more square (costing 10') to get adjacent, make a DC 5 balance check to stay on the tree, and attack this round with a +1 to hit from higher ground.

Going around, the dark green squares there are considered forest undergrowth squares, costing 2 squares of movement and providing concealment. So doing that, William would need 30' of movement to reach #1 through the woods, and wouldn't be able to attack this turn.

[sblock=ooc]whats the cost of failing the jump...or is there one outside of not being able to get over? Im also guessing failing the balance is going to end me up prone on the tree...[/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Failing the jump would spend 10' of movement without getting anywhere, if you see what I mean. Failing the balance, well, I suppose it would depend on how badly. Failing by just a few might mean falling off the tree (and possibly provoking an AoO, depending on where you are) but remaining upright. Failing by 5 or more would put you prone.[/sblock]

"So you do carry a man's weapon! Let's see if you're any good with it!" Octavio shouts as he feints an attack to the throat, dropping it at the last second to the man's shoulder.

ooc: Octavio will maintain Dodge on #2.

Attempt feinting in combat using Improved Feint. If bluff is successful, target loses DEX to AC for next attack.

Round 2

Jinx crouches behind his horse, but the sudden battle is too distracting for him to regain his concentration.

Tired of the little idiot who has been firing at him, William drops his shield and charges towards the tree, and makes a flying leap. He lands on top with a thud, and looks to the bandit. "Die you cowardly....whoaaa!" he yells as he loses his footing on the tree. He slides awkwardly to the ground, windmilling his arms, and manages to remain upright. The creature in front of him is as surprised as he is by this turn of events, and its tentative bite finds only air.

"So you do carry a man's weapon! Let's see if you're any good with it!" Octavio shouts as he feints an attack to the throat, dropping it at the last second to the man's shoulder. The creature falls for the feint and parries high, and Octavio's rapier bites deep into his shoulder. But as soon as the weapon is withdrawn, the wound begins to close, and after a moment only a minor cut remains, bleeding less than Octavio's own shoulder.

Tankard roars and attempts to replicate William's maneuver, but with even less success. He slips on the side of the tree and falls prone on the near side. (ooc: two natural 1s)

Thargon keeps running forward, but his short dwarven legs prevent him from reaching a striking position. He waves his waraxe menacingly.

Phelan readies and loads his crossbow.

Round 3

Creature number 1 recovers its poise, and, dropping its crossbow, whips out a rapier and stabs William, striking a terrible blow through his armor. (ooc confirmed crit, 10 damage)

The second creature attacks Octavio with both teeth and blade, but its blows are ineffective.

Octavio...

"What manner of demon-spawn are you!" Octavio cries out in suprise, seeing how ineffectual his attack is. While his next feint is a good one, he is unlikely to follow up on the attack.

ooc: Same as before. Dodge #2. Feint and attack.

Jinx stays right where he is, perfectly still, and actually closes his eyes for a moment. Bloody-.. need to get focused, Will is getting killed out there..

And just like that, the intruding edge of despair make him fall just short of his goal.
