Gradual Item Creation? Help please! [2002 Thread]

Okay, I have a question. Actually I had two, but another thread I just saw answered the other.

Example: Say I have a Masterwork, Mighty+4, Whip Dagger that I want to make magical. I eventualy want it to have Keen and Flaming Burst powers and perhaps others. I know it has to be a +1 weapon first before it can have other powers also.

My Item creator is a 6th level Wizard with the needed feat of Create Magic Arms & Armor and access to the needed requisite spells.

My question is whether or not I can do this creation a step at a time. Can I make the weapon +1 first then stop and later go back to add the Keen effect and the Flaming Burst effect seperately?

If so, am I just paying for another +1 enhancement (since each effect is +1 equivilent) each time or what? Please help!

You can add enhancements gradually. If you wanted to add another +1 to a +2 sword, you would have to pay the difference between a +3 weapon and a +2 weapon. In this case, that would be the difference between 18000 and 8000, so that would be 5000 gp and 400 exp to do it (if I'm remebering the math right, at least).

You still end up paying the same amount.

So in your example, it would cost 1000 gp and 80 exp to add the +1, then 3000 gp and 240 exp to add the keen, then 5000 gp and 400 exp to add the flaming burst.

Awesome!

Thanks Graydoom! I knew I had heard of a way to do it, but couldn't find it in the books or on the boards here since the old board is down and unsearchable for now. Between that and knowing now that my Cleric friend can cast Magic Stone while I make a weapon with Throwing powers.

Thanks again! See you in YB! land.

We need you in YB! land. It's been quiet over there all day today :(.

Its normally pretty quite over there on saturdays with nobody at work or school :p

I believe by the way the DMG does mention somewhere about the gradual addition of powers. This is the way my wife's wizard has worked on magic weapons and it seems like I picked it up from the DMG

Are there rules that allow you to add wondrous item powers to a weapon? I know that there are rules for adding secondary woundrous item powers to an existing woundrous item, but I'm not sure what the rules would be if we were to add, say, rope of climbing abilities to the whip dagger above.
