grapple, pinning and doing damage

Let's say I have a character with one grapple attack per round. I am already engaged in a grapple and I decide to pin my opponent, which succeeds. Since I won the pin do I also get to inflict my damage for the round? If not is my only action every round to keep my opponent pinned since I only have one attack per round and pin only lasts one round so I must continually renew the pin rather than inflict damage?

Yup, you do a grapple check to Pin instead of to do damage.

If you have only one attack per round (hence only one grapple attempt) then yes the Pin action takes up your grapple/attack action. Onced pinned however your opponent remains pinned until he/she escapes or breaks said pin. Note it is also possible for another opponent to break the Pin if multiple opponents are involved in the grapple.

If you get back to your turn without your target escaping or breaking the pin then you may opt to do another Grapple action such as doing damage or attack with a light weapon/natural weapon, etc. In the meantime of course your target remains pinned and can do no other action (besides attempting to escape or break the pin) until said pin is broken.

No, in 3.5 they remain pinned for 1 round. If you want them to stay pinned, you have to do it every round.

Thanks Caliban, hadn't caught that one yet. Well, I suppose that's what iterative attacks (and hence grapples) are for eh? Pin and whallop. Or more to the point Pin and allow others to wallop heh :p

dont forget about armor spikes, they do damage no matter what.

As I read it armor spikes only do damage on a successful grapple check, so you wouldn't be doing damage when an opponent grappels you but only when grappling on your turn as an action. Essentially Armor spikes give yo ua natural/light weapon to deal damage in a grapple with.

Afterall you aren't successfully grappling if you are opposing a grapple attempt on you, you would only be successfully preventing a grapple.

I disagree. A successful grapple check is any time you make a check and beat your opponent. This includes resisting grapples (but not escape artist) and making or resisting pin checks.

I'm pretty sure it's only meant to apply when you make a grapple check for damage.

And before you go quoting the PHB, I'm aware of what it says.
