Arnvid's smug smile made Mananga's blood boil. Had this soft pale thing slunk into his village, even the women would disdain to eat it. He only caught a word or two of the pale one's words, but the golden amulet resting on the man's chest drew the Kushite's eye. The Vanir had not been wearing the piece earlier.

As Arnvid's expression suddenly dissolved into a fearful gape, the Kushite heard the heavy crunch of glacial ice and a strange keening of something heavy moving through the air toward him.

OOC: Ongwi also notices the new amulet. No one else notices anything else... except the horses, of course. Mananga roll initiative. Arturio, roll a pre-emptive Ride check.

OOC: Wicked. Our Vanir friends had no such luck...except for Arnvid, who's marginally competant....but I'll wait for Wulf...

OOC: As crappy as that roll is, you still go first in the surprise round.

Mananga whirls to a surreal scene. Where there once was a jagged expanse of ice stands a massive bluish white wyrm, its thick wings spread and snake-like head drawing back to strike Arturio and his horse. He can see that it must have climbed out of some break in the ice covering the rift. As he moves to action, the horses in front of the creature scatter, casting most of their Vanir riders onto the glacier. Several wheel and charge onto the precarious ice covering the rift. The screams of horses and men mingle as they fall to their doom.

Arturio manages to keep his garron under control, though it sidesteps crazily, eyes rolling with its own guttural scream. Arnvid reins his own mount into submission bellowing for his men to stand their ground.

OOC: Mananga is 15 feet away from the beast. Both Arturio and Ongwi are directly next to it (they were facing away from the rift). Horses are running crazy, and it's Mananga's standard action for the surprise round. Note, I said 'massive', but the creature is actually only about twice as big as a horse. 10' size 5' reach. -- sorry I don't have a battle map ready...

Mananga toyed with the thought of killing Arturio's mount beneath him before it carried him over the abyss, but just as he stepped forward, he let fly at the ice worm instead.

5 foot step forward, throw the spear.

Attack and damage roll:
attack roll; damage roll (1d20+3=4, 1d6+2=4)

Has anybody mentioned yet how bad this server sucks?

(There's a natural 1 there for you, GM.)

[OOC: You might have killed Arturio's mount anyway :p!]

Mananga unlimber his spear and stepped forward with a bloodcurdling yell that cut off quickly, the spear flying wide, as he struggled to keep his feet on the uneven and treacherous surface.

"To me and the wyrm!" yelled Arnvid, his broad-bladed throwing axe singing through the wind and striking true.

Where the axe sheared, hot black blood steamed from the wyrm's neck, as it lunged at Arturio's horse, long ivory teeth gashing open the creature's flank.

OOC: Mananga Dex check DC12 to stay on your feet. Everyone else roll init. What I wouldn't give to have the GT SRD. A natural 1 gets you an action point? Can't remember. Take a chip off my DM card.

If this Dex check is a result of my rolling a 1, in other words a critical fumble, then, yeah, you award an action point.

But you're the GM, whatever you want to do...

Dex check. (1d20+2=12)

That was close...
