Halfling Rogues Subtitution (RoW)

Hi,

Could someone clarify what exactly does the 1st level of the Halfling Rogue racial substitution (From Races of the Wild) do, the wordings seems a bit confusing. (If this has been clarified before, I apologize). Does he get +1d6 Ranged sneak attack and 0 melee sneak attack? When he advances, what happens?

They get an additional +1d6 damage on their sneak attack with slings & thrown weapons and -1d6 on their melee sneak attacks.

So at first level you would have +2d6 sneak attack damage with slings & thrown weapons, 1d6 on other ranged sneak attacks, and no sneak attack damage in melee.

It would advance from there.

Hopefully that's not more confusing...
