Handling everyday people with the Generic Class Sytem

Flicking through the Hypertext SRD, in the variant rules section the Generic Class system kinda caught my eye: I'm bored with the base classes, and think that a generic, highly customizable system would be something to try out at least. Problem is that I'm not sure how NPC's fit into this - I mean, obviously the more important/powerful/whatever ones could take either Expert, Warrior or Spellcaster, but not everyone has the abillity or training for that. Besides, how would you classify an annonymous farmer in this system?

I'm considering using the commoner NPC class for everyone else, but I'm not convinced that it will work too great. Especially since I'm not sure how these classes will affect overall campaign power level and feel. I'm looking on input on a few things here:

  • How would you handle the low-level, untalented and generally unimportant NPC's, that will occasionally crop up and NEED to be statted out?
  • Do you think that the Generic Class system is balanced?
  • For those who have used the system how do you think it affects the overall feel of the game? Magic level? Power level?
