Happy Haggert Hurried Hungry Hitch Hiking Hired Henchmen Hivers.... apply within

I have quite successfully procrastinated on some much-needed plumbing repairs for several days now...

This is not a good thing, lol - I have to keep a five-gallon Home Depot bucket under my severely-leaking tub faucet because the tub drain is leaking, and if I don't come straight home from work it fills and overflows. Yep, five gallons of water in a little over eight hours. Feh. I have a catch basin rigged up downstairs under the drain (made with the bottom of an Arizona Green Tea jug, duct tape and a wetvac hose) to funnel the dripwater into the downstairs shower, but I really need to get this done sometime before the weekend.

Jack is an idiot.

Catching y’all up:

First week of October, Dad finally got COVID. He was up-to-date with all of his vaccinations except the latest booster, so his case was pretty mild. He was kinda low-energy, coughing, sniffling, etc. Got on Paxlovid ASAP.

Mom & I had gotten our boosters a day or so before Dad tested positive, and we both tested negative.

A few days of sniffles & a mild cough later, I tested positive for COVID. I get put on Paxlovid. Mom is still negative.

Dad takes his last dose of Paxlovid, and Mom finally tests positive. She’s put on Paxlovid, but like me, it’s just sniffles and minor coughing.

Note: one Paxlovid side effect we ALL noticed was that it gives you a persistent bitter taste in your mouth. It abated while you’re eating and about 30min afterwards, but then returns. For Mom and me, the taste disappeared about 12 hours after the last dose. For Dad, it disappeared AFTER Mom’s did.

Halloween: we knew it was going to be a light evening because it was a weeknight, there was a cold snap, and the Texas Rangers were playing in the World series, so we bought about 50% of what we usually do…and STILL have most of it left.

Bonus: Dad came home with a case of food poisoning from something brought to his office by a pharmaceutical rep. Others were also sickened, so the office got closed for a couple of days.

First week of November, Mom gets a second bout of COVID in conjunction with some other minor infections, and winds up hospitalized for a few days.

Two days after she gets released, I get sick with some kind of (undiagnosed) intestinal affliction, and I’m virtually useless for 2 days. So there’s me (sick) and Dad (recovering) taking care of Mom (recovering).

Today: Dad’s fine, I’m fine, Mom is recovering. The combination of illnesses really took the wind out of her sails.

So- surprise, surprise- we are NOT hosting a big Thanksgiving dinner this year. We’re not HAVING a big Thanksgiving meal this year. I might not even be COOKING this holiday.

We might invite 1-2 people over who don’t have family in town, and get some tasty sides and a fried or smoked turkey from restaurants/grocery stores. Strictly low key.

Inviting some who don't have family over is a wonderful thing to do, since we have a FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) here, there are some members of my church who aren't able to go home for the holiday so a family in my ward is inviting them over. I also got an invite.

Danny, so sorry to hear of the covid reaching your home
Thanks!

TBH, though, the initial affliction was amazingly mild for me & Mom (just sniffles & a cough) and not much worse than a flu for my Dad.

Mom didn’t have a rough go until the 2nd time she caught it, and then probably only because of the other contemporaneous infections she got. And THAT’S kind of her own personal curse. Every few years, she winds up in the ER- and occasionally in the hospital- because several simultaneous health issues hit her. One year she had 9 different issues…and it cost her 4 days of her memory. Silver lining: that year’s health scare helped her get off a weight loss plateau, kickstarting subsequent controlled weight loss progress that even resulted in getting taken off of some of her diabetes meds. And she’s kept it off, too!

Last year, in December, I had a liver scare.
Lesions, lots of them. The largest was 36 cm^2. I had no fever or pain, but a cycle of feverish chills, and unexplained weight loss. I was down to 230 lbs from 280 lbs and oh so very weak.

Pet scan showed cancer like activity
Follow up cat scans showed shrinkage
If it WERE cancer, it would have either grown or remained the same size.
They were going to do a biopsy but it had all shrunk so much, they didn't want to risk infection due to my 2011 perforated intestinal scare.

Interestingly enough, on my second birthday I have a follow up cat scan.

I said all that to say this: my weight is a steady 250 +/- 3 lbs and when I have had a goog morning, I jog up a 1 block long hill on my way to work.

Against the odds I still improve on my health, and may your mother do likewise!!!

I hope everyon had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Ours had a few hiccups, but overall, we got what we aimed for- a nice quiet and relaxing meal for 4 adults.
