There’s parallels between the personal and philosophical relationship Magneto has with Professor X and what Louis Farrakhan and Malcom X had with MLK.

And believe me, the divisions in black society over those 3 (and those that followed in each’s footsteps) are also echoed in how mutants view Mags & the Prof.

And I definitely got the analogy Marvel writers were making. As a short, perennially fat, myopic, black, Catholic, brainiac nerd, I’ve had my own rogue’s gallery of bullies. And while I’ve never been to Vidor, my parents actually moved to Irving, Tx in 1982, when I was 14.

At the time, it wasn’t a sundown town (anymore) but it was still a KKK stronghold and the most segregated city in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.* Not only did several small business owners & operators know who my parents were in alarming detail the first day they met, black professionals reached out to them and asked “Why are YOU here?”

* Today, Irving has become so multicultural it’s mind-boggling. The white supremacists haven’t left, but there’s sooooooo many more brown people there now they’re not as brazen.

I kept thinking the term mutant supremacist. I even linked it to Black supremacists, but didn't think of Louis Farrakhan and Malcolm X. I can see it.

I had heard that Alabama has a town that still sounds a siren at sunset. "It's tradition" they say. All the black people understand what it used to be used for. Georgia had an entire county that seemed to be a sundown town until the 90s. I remember the news showing the open Klan marches they held there. I know that one county wasn't alone. There had to be others, they were just more open about it. I remember when I was very young I saw men in white robes and hoods, and one in a red robe at my neighbor:s house. As I came to understand the one in the red robe lived there. I didn't understand the meaning at the time. My parents did though. The world can be frightening, especially for someone seen as different. I'm kinda surprised humans have made it this far without killing themselves off.

I encountered a young woman sitting on the side of the road. Most times of the day this could be red flag. At 3am it's a siren. I pulled up to her and asked if she was ok. She said no, that she was in an abusive relationship. I asked if she needed to call someone or call 911. She said she didn't want to make things worse. She said she had a baby and didn't want to leave them with their father. She was just waiting for him to go to sleep. I reminded her that a fire station was just down the road. She knew of it and thought of walking there. I offered to go with her to get her baby. She declined. She said having someone to tell helped her feel better. I told her she didn't have to stay with the guy. I'm just some stranger and don't know her but she's important and her baby is important. They don't deserve it.

It was over 2 hours ago and I'm still saddened by it. I'll probably never see her again. I'll never know if she got out of the situation. I did what I could. I didn't want to push. I hope she'll be ok and strong enough to leave him.

I take the bus to work every day. One day a few years ago, a young woman got on the bus and sat down across the aisle from me, next to an older grandmotherly-looking black woman. We both noticed that the young woman was wearing large sunglasses for such an early time in the morning, and when she turned her head, we both noticed two large purple knuckle-prints on the side of her left eye. It was a pretty gnarly shiner.

"That looks like it hurt," the grandmother said to the young woman.

She pulled her hair down to the side of her sunglasses. "Heh, yeah, it looks worse than it feels. I stood up and hit my refrigerator door by accident."

"You need a new refrigerator then," the older woman said immediately. "A refrigerator like that ain't worth a damn. If you need someone to haul it off, I can give you some phone numbers." And then the young woman started sobbing.

You just can't lie to a grandmother.

Just handed in my entry for a 1-sheet adventure challenge at a Swedish rpg-forum. The challenge was to write a scenario for any system on the theme about marriage. you were allowed to use 1 A4-sheet of paper (both pages). So I wrote a little scenario for The Troubleshooters.

Might write more, as the challenge goes on until the end of the month. ;)
