D&D (2024) Has the new PHB reveals made you want to stick to an older edition of D&D, or to move onto a 5e-adjacent RPG?

I haven't moved since 2017, the official 5e line for me died after Xanathar, I am not going to make any move.

For DMing, I have BECMI, 3.0 and 5e.

As a player, I can play anything if they invite me to, I am as likely to play 5.5 as any other RPG.

I have not played 5e since 2019. Did not see anything in the new PHB that would bring me back to 5e. Valiant, Pathfinder, Shadowdark, and 5e Nimble are just variations of the same thing to me. Retired with a fixed income makes you reevaluate FOMO and overspending on shiny new games.

Currently, I'm dabbling with D&D 3.5. It's fun to revisit as a solo player but like all D&D editions I revisited in 2023, I know it won't last. I'm done with D&D.

Fantasy AGE and Dragonbane are the fantasy games I play solo and with the group. I'll stick to those for the foreseeable future.

I am far from retiring but I am aging at the same speed as you (assuming you're living on the surface of earth, naturally) and I have my big share of FOMO which is making me try (and sometimes stick to) new hobbies and experiences all the time. Following the mainstream is actually a huge waste of time for my own version of FOMO

To be clear, I don't "stick to" games. I am not devoted to playing one game or another like I am married to it or something.

Right now, I am running a 5E game. Before that I ran a several years Ashen Stars game. Before that, I ran several years of Classic Deadlands. My next game may be Savage Worlds, or Cortex, or...

I don't watch only CSI TV shows, or only go to see Marvel movies. I don't see much gain to be had in binding to one single edition of one game, or the like.

If anything, its all just a confirmation that the direction Wizards is going, isnt the one I want to go in. I wont bother to list all the reasons, but there are plenty of other options that better fit my current mood, desire to invest time, and the tone I would prefer to see in a product.

The PHB reveals have pretty much solidified that I'm sticking with 2014 5e, though I have considered bringing ideas from older editions into future campaigns (after my recent experience with running OD&D). The 2025 Monster Manual could still possibly get me to switch to 2024 5e, if I liked it as much or more than the 2014 version... but that's looking unlikely from the reveals thus far.

The 5e-adjacent competitors like Tales of the Valiant and DC20 and such have some interesting changes from 2014 5e, but also changes that turn me off, so unlikely to adopt them as my go-to. But might steal some ideas.

Yep. None of the 5e clones really do enough for me. The thread about 'are our tastes set' or whatever kind of crystalized a few thoughts for me.

I'm just not looking for 3/3.5/PF 1 or 2/5e/LU/TotV anymore. I want something lighter, faster, that doesnt take itself so seriously and just...touches grass.

Didn’t we already have this thread?
