WotC Hasbro gains big time from D&D, Magic, Monopoly, and Baldur's Gate 3

Possibly, but, it doesn't make it any less true.

The whole "OGL debacle" was a blip. It made zero difference. There was no great drop in D&D Beyond Subs. There was no drop in sales for WotC. For all the drama, it had basically zero impact.

The one thing that the OGL debacle did highlight is how little any of it mattered. For the people for whom it was important, it was a huge thing. For most of the fandom? They didn't even hear about it.
This for me as well. While I am glad they backed down as I think that was the right move for them, that’s the extent that I cared.

I don't disagree with that. People are concerningly okay with corporations lying to and manipulating their customers.

Not "OK" with it as such, but gotta hate the game, not the playa.

Of course publivlly traded corporations lie to and manipulate customers. That's not new, or going to stop st some point.

People “out there” heard about it en mass.

The run on of every thing from Pathfinder to DCC to even Mörk Borg at everywhere from Amazon to FGLs came from those folks.

Even now Magic live streams get OGL jokers threadcapping along with Pinkerton thread capping.

It did make serious non-game news outlets, and shareholders brought it up in meetings. So it made noise.

However, those snarky comments on social media seem to have been the largest long-term effect on WotC, other than being forced to make their IP even more open. Still pretty fresh for 3PP, and the CC is historic.

If WotC wants machinima videos can be produced using D&D VTT then the miniatures can't be only "statues" but these can be animated. Why not any software tool like that Marvel "Make your own comic"? I mean the VTT should offer something enoughly interesting for streamers.

Other idea could be selling packs could be useful for different products, for example with a pack of skins for Fortnite you also can get as gift new "virtual miniatures" for the VTT.

How would be using D&D VTT to play solo-games of Hero Quest? But with a mode where the player has got total control to can playtest house rules or homebred ideas.

* Why not a collab with CMON for a Zombicide: Falkovnia? Or the monsters of "Dead by Daylight" in the VTT as virtual miniatures.

* Why not to sell 1d14, 1d16 and 1d18 dices for collectors or possible house rules?

Considering the plans Paizo has announced for replacing their backend financial system, upgrading their online store, replacing their forums, and improving their warehouse situation I'd say the number of people that stuck with them is a good amount. Morrus has said on this forum sales of EN Publishing games has continued to do better than they were before the OGL situation. That doesn't mean WotC has seen much if any impact and that's pretty easy to rationalize IMO.

Despite not making the money they wanted in the theater, I'd argue the brand awareness boost of the D&D movie did a lot to bring new folks into the D&D game which ended up still being growth for WotC despite whatever customers they lost to Paizo, Goodman Games, EN Publishing, and so on. Look at the surge in Google searches related to D&D around the time of the movie. They continue to pull in new players and honestly it's pretty impressive.

I'm not sure we can draw reasonable inferences from the activities of the terminally online.

The people who live on the internet are often compared to those legendary experimental rats who kept hitting a button over and over to get a pellet. But at least the rats were getting a pellet, or the hope of a pellet, or the memory of a pellet. When we hit the button to send our thoughts out on the internet, all we are getting is to be more of a rat.

But ... but ... we needs the fake internet points! They are precious, so precious!

My point was those folks glom on to popular things to troll about.

It’s gotta be tantamount to a meme. An easily and widely understood one.
