Have you ever killed a PC on purpose?

Not that I'm considering this (really, I'm not!), but I got to thinking whether anyone has?

Why did you do it?
What was your tactic?
Did you feel bad? :)

If you mean, did I decide "Well, the dwarf is in the middle of the room, and is the only lone target. He makes the most sense for the orcs to surround and take down." Then yes, I did conciously make a decision that lead to the death of a character.

If you mean "Ok, I'm sick of that sorcerer, he's dying this session." Then no, I did not set things against a character that he had a small chance of survival against. Though I did enjoy watching the dice roll when the sorcerer tried to use an axe against an ogre. His move at 0 hp was to run back to his allies, and the AOO missed.

It's kinda a long story...

There was this cleric with an extradimensional space in his head with a small keep in it (from a Deck of Many Things). In a major assault on a threat to his god, his god dispelled the extradimensional space, exploding his head and bringing the keep out to utterly destroy most of the archfoe's defenses.

The character new it was coming, and accepted that his sacrifice was necessary. It was a beautiful piece of roleplaying from one of the best rp'ers I've ever had the pleasure to game with. One of my favorite characters that have been around in my game, too.

You killed a guy by exploding his head?

You killed a guy by exploding his head!!!

I LOVE YOU MANG!!!

Depends on what you mean by "on purpose".

Once, as the last game of a campaign, I put the party against a really tough BBEG (this was 1e, so no concept of CR). Only one character survived the final fight. In a sense, I deliberately and intentionally pitted the PCs against a dangerous foe that I guessed would probably kill most of them.

Another time, during a 2e Planescape game, a 1st-level PC decided to attack a horde of Doomguards. He died, too.

Yes.

It was probably bad DMing but there are some things players can quickly do to annoy me.

DM: "I'll be running a heroic campaign. Minimal to nil on inter-party conflict. We have some new people and I dont' want to give them the wrong impression of us as a group."

Player: "No problem. Chaotic Neutral rogue-assassin it is!"

DM: "The orc rolls another 20. Yeah, 32 points of damage with that great axe. Sorry buddy..."

well there has been characters in my campaign that needed to be killed (all the other players hated the character and the player made him only to do something different).

The one that comes to mind is a sorcerer who's spell choices were the silly ones that had no use in the type of campaign we were running (Night Below). The character survived until 7th level. They ended up in a random encounter with a bunch of mounted dwarves on spiders. The dwarves charged, and it just happened that the sorc was the closest target for one of the dwarfs. *squish*. The best part about the character dying is that all the players at the table (including the one who was playing this sorcerer) reached over and shook my hand saying things like "Thank you", "Took you long enough", "I can't beleive he lasted 7 levels", "About freakin time, dude!"

Ahhhhhh.... memories

Only if it's appropriate, and the player is okay with it.

I had a player leaving on vacation for a while, and his character was having trouble with lycanthropy. So it was an appropriate death when the paladin in the party killed him.

Sure, the paladin did the deed, but I really set it up.
