Heart of Artifice: Part I--Engineered Enigma

Anvuss, chagrinned that everyone but him seems able to use this gateway, steps back upon it. At this point, he earnestly wishes to understand how the mechanism works.

*Nothing happens again.*

*Elizabeth taps her lip gently with her pointer finger.*

"I don't understand...so far, we know it worked for me, and it apparently worked a different way for Kharas and Aethelus, but the same for the two of them. Do you think that they have something that triggers it one way, I had something that triggered it another, and you have neither? I don't understand this...I would ask Diggy but...he's not here. We have to figure it out ourselves."

Anvuss steps away from the mechanism.

"I suppose I could try and trigger it wildly, but the potential consequences on a device of this magnitude are impossible to chart. I would prefer not to find myself scattered in pieces from here to Sarlona. Of course, we have nothing by which we may be sure that something of that sort hasn't happened to our friends."

Anvuss thinks for a moment.

"Let us try one more thing. Come and hold my hands, and we shall step in together. Concentrate on finding Lucy, and see if your aura, desire or magical attunement is sufficient to carry us both."

*Elizabeth tries this, only to find that when she enters the array and wishes, the gems grow slightly dull temporarily. They had not reacted to Anvuss at all, and with the other two, the light flared up and shot forth from the four pillars to create a gateway that sucked them in, but for Elizabeth, it is yet different.*

"Perhaps...perhaps it will not trigger for me again? Because I have already had my wish?"

"Yes, I anticipated that possibility. If it is some sort of wish engine, it may only work once for any given person. Are my wishes perhaps too weak or to abtract for the machine? Or perhaps, without your level of experience to shape me, it does not regard me as a person at all?"

"No, I am sure it knows you are a person Anvuss, just as you and I know it. Perhaps it is true that your wishes are too weak or too abstract. I know that my desire was fueled by a passionate fire when it triggered for me. I doubt it was that strong for Kharas or Aethelus, but maybe just thinking about it isn't enough."

Anvuss nods, and goes to try again.

He starts by trying to blank his mind, then focuses on finding Lucy. He concentrates on that single thought for several minutes, until either the concentration has some effect or the shere frustration of the experience raises his desire to understand the machine to a level at which something happens.

(OOC: Several minutes, eh? Innnnnnteresting. I'll see what the others do. Meanwhile, is Anvuss going to wind up with any desires other than to understand the machine? Since everyone else is already in--I'll fully come clean since it might help.

Each gem is capable of being used as one-fourth of the energy needed to grant up to three wishes. However, if you keep the exact same four gems in, the array can continue to grant any wish (or multiple wishes) from a new person that can be achieved by doing one or more of the same things those gems already know how to do. It is the case that the original ruby for the array was lost after one use, so the Wyrd Ruby has been used twice, the others three times (so no more new wishes since three of them are out of energy), and it remembers the two wishes it knows--it can open that portal, or it can turn you into a woman. It will do this if it seems like your desire can be granted by either trigger. For instance, Aethelus doesn't care at all about the kids, but he desired personal power and secrets of artificing that would put him ahead of his peers, and that was enough. Kharas was simpler and just wanted to find the kids. However, wanting to know how the device works will not be accomplished by doing either of those things.

Does that help? He could always wait for one of the other two to figure out how to return, as well, in which case they could bring him in also because the array has become a portal for them)
