Heinlein World

Taking a clue from the Discoworld thread and the Heinlein thread…

I want to get my brother-in-law a book or two from this author for him to try out but I have no idea which ones are the best for someone just starting the series. What would you recommend?

He probably means Orphans of the Sky, which is a compilation of two related novellas Universe and Common Sense. Heinlein also wrote Farmer in the Sky, which was serialized in Boy's Life since the main character is a Boy Scout.

If I were suggesting some Heinlein books, I would suggest The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, The Puppet Masters, and Double Star for a start.

Stranger in a Strange Land is not a juvie, at least IMHO. It is, however, an excellent book.

Another YA piece that is a good read - Podkayne of Mars - especially with the original ending (which, I think, is the only one they print now).

I'm also partial to Have Spacesuit, Will Travel. I can't believe I forgot that one yesterday.

I generally wouldn't recommend Starnger In a Strange Land as the first Heinlein book for someone, although it is excellent.

But all of his YA books are quite good: Starman Jones, Star Beast, Red Planet, Rocket Ship Galileio, Citizen of the Galaxy, Tunnel in the Sky, Farmer in the Sky, Space Cadet, Have Spacesuit - Wll Travel, and yes, Podkayne of Mars.
