They aren't always, though. What about the classic tomb that no one has plundered? The monsters don't come out, the adventurers go in. And many, many modules have evil, or even neutral, monsters that lurk in their depths and don't emerge, yet the pcs still kill them and take their stuff. Otyugh, I'm looking at you.

And those PC's are all probably neutral, no matter what their sheet may say. If your primary motivation is "Killing people and taking their stuff"...you're probably neutral (and possibly evil).

Or possibly good, but probably not a paladin. Alignment's good like that. You still can do some evil and/or questionable things because only one class and a few prestige classes really care about you ever doing one bad thing at all.
