i have already been on d&d.com and still don't know what i need, but thanx for the help.
i have all the rulebooks as i have the starter set, but if i open a booster do i need to use the stat cards in a roleplaying session?:o

Do you have an existing group to play with or are you starting your own?

If the former, you'll probably need only the Player's Handbook at first.

sounds like you have the basic boxed set and the minis from the aberrations booster pack.

they are a good start.

if you want to learn more. you will need the PHB. Players Handbook

and then perhaps the DMG. Dungeon Masters Guide

followed by the MM. Monster Manual

Uh, Houston, we have a problem.

Dragon-lord, what you've got are two separate games.

One is a game that involves the use of miniatures where you compete against other players using a combination of tactics and strategy. Sort of like chess, except with dragons, and elves.

The second is a book for a role-playing game. It's played with pencil and paper, and dice, where you take on the role of a fantasy figure and fight things like orcs and dragons. In this game, you can use the miniatures that you have to represent those figures on some sort of over-sized graph paper in order to determine where everyone is in relation to one another, and to resolve certain combat effects. The miniatures are only an aid, and not necessarily required to play this version.

But, neither is a single-player game. You'll need friends. At least one other for the miniatures game, and several more for the role-playing game.
