Hero: NOT the next CTHD

Well Zhang Yi Mou's Hero is out in HK, and has mixed reviews. Wonderfully shot but more style than substance. I guess Sony-Columbia isn't going to the CTHD blockbuster it expected.

Tony Leung is an awesome freakin actor, tho i've never seen him in a martial arts movie.

Tony Leung has been in a few. All Men Are Brothers, for one. He should be able to manage the role well.

I have a friend who got back from HK a few days ago and saw the flick.

He said that it was average but had a few good scenes such as when the heroes go thru an army

I just saw it and I'm disappointed. The fight scenes are more chereography and action, and the whole film works more like an essay rather than a story. It's overwrought and dry, and makes you yearn for the humour and fun of a Jacky Chan film or other martial arts movies such as Once Upon A Time. It's very pretty to look at, and I think most people would enjoy it visually but will have no affinity for the story or the characters.
