Hexblades and Warlocks

Having recently borrowed Complete Warrior and Complete Arcane from a friend of mine, I began to imagine a culture that'd been isolated from the "mainstream" in campaign world for several generations. In this time, they began to develop an alternative method of using magic; thus, warlocks.

Then I began to think that these very unique mages might pass along some of their knowledge to a warrior faction in an effort to raise an army unlike any ever seen before--the Hexblades. But what if, instead of casting spells as per the Complete Warrior, they substituted the Warlocks' spell-like abilities and invocations instead? They'd still be restricted to the same casting level rules (a Hexblade casts invocations as a Warlock 1/2 her level). Or perhaps they could be restricted even further, to say only being able to cast any invocation a number of times per day equal to their CHA bonus + 1/2 Hexblade level, as opposed to unlimited times per day.

Anyway...just a rambling thought before bed.

The two would definitely go well together and make a nice set of folks who are "different" and therefore likely to be mysterious or dangerous for the mainstream party.

Very cool.

Good idea.

One thing you might consider is restricting certain evocations to warlocks only, so that the hexblades are forced to select from the more directly warlike applications.

Alternately, you might develop a few ones unique to the hexblade, to make that class better fill an armed bodyguard/vanguard role.

I like the idea. I've been contemplating a homebrew campaign world for the past 20+ years and I think I would definitely find room for both of these classes and also look to making the hexblades more warlock-like as has been suggested.

Another option might be a mystic theurge-like PrCthat provides for progression in both classes.
