Hide in Plain Sight Versus True Seeing

Here is a different situation:

A rogue is hiding in the shadows cast by an illusionary wall. Someone with True Seeing looks at him, what does he see?

If he sees things as the actually are, the rogue is not hiding, he can't be, there is no where to hide. There is no true shadow to hide in, just as in Hide in Plain sight does not provide any protection from True Seeing as there is nothing actually to hide in.

(There is no movement required in Hide in Plain Sight, Dimensional Lock does not stop it, so if you are standing in front of someone looking at you with the only shadow being cast is a quarter inch in diameter 10 feet away, you can still hide from them. That is how the rules are written)

(Further the list of what True Seeing can see through is not exclusive, meaning it is only list of examples)

Yes, I'd let anyone with Darkvision or True Seeing see the rogue in this example, also anyone who disbelieved the wall successfully, because then the rogue has no means to hide, regardless of how much he tries.

It's just as possible that the Shadowdancer shifts partially into the Plane of Shadow, just enough to have his visible form flicker out of view for a bit. Does True Seeing thwart this? Not at all.

TS does not foil any magical deception. It's very specific on those magical deceptions that are vulnerable to it.

Well, I like your idea about the plane of shadow-that could work for me. However, whilst TS does have a list of what it defeats, I don't think that list is intended to be exhaustive- after all, it has a list of what ISN'T defeated by it, too, and dancer HIPS isn't on either list ;)

Manual of the planes p.64: "The shadowdancer prestige class described on Chapter 2 of the Dugeon Master's Guide uses shadows but does not enter the Plane of Shadow directly."
Oh!

If it overcomes it due to overcoming the darkness in the shadows, it does not matter that it is Su vs Ex.
I think it does matter- because the ex version of the ability is using something REAL to hide behind, even if its a hummock of grass which ordinary guys couldn't make use of but Special Air Service chaps (or Rangers) can. Whereas the su version is hiding only because of a magical ability providing the concealment. TS can "see secret doors CONCEALED BY MAGIC", for example, but not "secret doors concealed through mundane means."

Definitely one for Sage Advice, though. Now, who wants to vlounteer to write in and ask :D
