So how many hit points do you give your players when they level?

Heres how I do it-- Make them roll, re-roll ones. If they don't like the result, spend a 100xp and roll again. Some of my players spend close to 1000 xp each time they level.

I just give my monsters and my NPC Max hit points minus like 5 or 10.

We roll 'em, as per normal.

The randomness we see as a character-builder. If you happen to roll low for a couple of levels, you learn to compensate, and the character grows in one direction. If you roll high, the character grows in another, and so on.

We make 'em roll, but they get to reroll a one. However, if the reroll turns up as a one, in our view that character was destined to get a one, so they are stuck with it. Seems to work pretty well, though it's not fun when the dice decide to hate you for a level or two.

I voted Other.

Here is how it is when I DM:

The PC's roll 2 dice and take the higher of the 2. They may reroll 1's only once. Dat's it. It has worked well so far. :)

I have them roll but allow re rolls of ones (and you can keep re-rolling until you get a result other than one - you'd be surprised how often this has happened - some of my players' dice hate them ;) ).

We roll, but I have toyed with an idea, inspired by my Gnomish Wizard. Though the dice had been kind to him, near max HP, I was thinking of a Limited Wish giving you 1 HP per casting, not to exceed your maximum potential.

Thoughts?
