We should rig up Horacio with a connection to the net so every time a story hour is updated it wakes him with a little electric shock :)

"Horacio, All Day, Every Day, with new Horacio Uplink!"
Could be interesting, do I get to choose where the connection is located on him? :D

That's the best way to learn. :) Memory could be the issue. But not a lack of it. I would think it more likely that you had a bad stick of memory. That's easy to work around. If the RAM you have been recently given is a known good product load with only that Ram in place.

If you know anyone with Norton Systemworks ask them to come over and run its DiskDoctor, which can be done from DOS without installing. So, no issues of piracy there. It can check to be sure that the HDD is in good working order, no bad sectors etc. I hope it is not the HDD but when I had a similar problem that's what the issue was.

I always find it useful to check the little things. Open the case, check to see that all the connectors are properly tight, and reseat all PCI cards. In fact, I would take out all unnecssary components and install with just the video card if at all possible, and work up from that point.

Okay.

I said it. I'm a Mac abuser. My name is Barsoomcore.

But I'm really understanding when it starts complaining.

Not like that flashy iMac that needs attention every couple of days. Slut.

LOL. That is wonderful. LOL

Don't think lack of memory was a problem, a 256 stick in there. New stick is 512 and my friend tried it on his computer before sending it to me and it seemed to work so will try it. And yes as the only memory in there.

Michael, I don't have any problems with anything else using AOL 8.0 that I can identify is the problem of the version. I am not going to degrade my program just so I can see your toolbar with no downtime, get over it.

How much diskspace is it taking, comparatively? And it's not just about this toolbar. You're bemoaning how much you're computer sucks and your pissed because I'm telling you why? What sense does that make??

A PII 333 machine with 128 RAM should not

  • Be running Win XP. XP is designed for a MINIMUM PIII processor and a 256 RAM and it won't run well on anything less than 600 mhz and 512 RAM. That system would be happiest with Windows 98/SE (Win ME is a joke. NOONE should use that OS ... No one).
  • Run any browser after MSIE 5.x.
  • I would dare say AoL 6.0 is the lastest version that would fit comfortably on such a machine.

In case you haven't been listening newer software that is beyond the ability of the machine is a bad idea. I learned this the hard way by putting Win 95 of a 486DX 66 mhz... My GOD it barely functioned. I stubbornly plodded on just as you're no doubt doing now, bemoaning my sucky system. That system is now back on Win 3.11 and running happily.

Your hardware is the foundation of your computer. If the software you put on it is too bloated the system will crumble.

No, that's more than enough RAM, and if it worked on his then that leaves you with either a bad HDD or something shorting on the motherboard.

You may want to be sure its properly grounded, by checking that the screws have it firmly in place. Also, if you can get the manual for the board, ensure that the screws are, or are not supposed to have washers on them. (this one is a long shot, its usually never that)

You may even want to consider transplanting your current HDD into the new machine, and placing the newer HDD as the slave, used for file storage. It normally will just get up and run, with only the detection of new hardware to slow you down. If you are running Office it will ask you to insert the CD the first time you run it, just to be sure you are not pirating, but after that, you are good to go.

I have no problems with disk space. My computer sucks compared to the new one which is much faster. I don't use xp in the old one only Win 98. I like AOL 8.0 and will continue to use it. I never asked you or anyone else for help on my old computer which runs fine for what it is. I am not the only person that can't vote on these boards because of an AOL browser, nor the only person that had their computer crash because of the news ticker.

Michael is now on ignore.

Edit : Or would be on ignore if he was not a mod.

Sorry, didn't come off clear. I have not tried the new memory that my friend sent yet. :)
My plan is to do so, with it as the only memory stick in it, when I do. I hope that will fix it.
