Homebrew Post-Apoc d20.

K-Slacker

First Post
Not sure how interested people are, but I've put together a set of homebrew d20 rules for a post-apocalyptic game I'm running. The intent was to streamline and simplify, wherever possible, the d20 system to create more of a “fast-and-loose” approach to gaming.

You can check out the site at:

The rules have been adapted from Dominic Covey’s “Darwin’s World”, Jonathan Tweet’s “Omega World”, and old editions of Gamma World. The “SPECIAL” Attributes are lifted from the Fallout CRPG. A lot of material was also borrowed from “Castles & Crusades” and “d20 Apocalypse” (from Troll Lord Games and Wizards of the Coast, respectively).

Wow, cool stuff. I like the blend of various rules and settings. How has actual play been? It seems a little light on variation, was there only 4 class types?
What do you use for gear? I didn't see any listed, so I assume you just use whatever resources you have?
I especially like SPECIAL and always liked that about Fallout.
Oh, and the Creep, creeps me out ;-) Though I like the feel of it, does it seem to put a 'black cloud' over players, knowing they will inevidably slowly die a horrible death by adventuring?

Overall though, I think you did a real good job at meshing the 3-4 games into a simpler system. I'd play it.

Thanks for the feedback. We haven't kicked off the new adventure yet, but I did run a variation of this system as a play by e-mail for a few years.

The small number of base classes never seemed a problem, since the characters were mostly differentiated by their mutations. In that game, the PCs were Primitive-Tech 'Tribal Defenders', so the equipment lists were similar to the D&D tables; eventually I'll update the gear on the Scorched Earth site.

The Creep system is adapted from 'Redline', a post-apoc RPG from Fantasy Flight Games. In the old campaign, nobody ever got messed up enough to suffer any serious effects (but they did have a PC with a 'Creepsense' mutation, so were able to avoid exposure).

Good to hear you're interested in playing. I'd like the potential players to roll up their PCs by next weekend or so. There are instructions on how to use the online dice roller to make a character; follow the link:

Wow. Kudos on the web design alone. I'm still going through the rules, but I love that the SPECIAL system made it in! Hopefully I'll have more to report later on.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you're interested in the rules; I was really inspired to go with a more 'rules-lite' system by some 20 minute D&D arguments over AoO and grappling. We're in gameplay mode now, so rules updates have taken a backseat, but there's some advanced stuff that I want to incorporate before too long.

If you would like to see the previous iteration of the system, check out my old (pre-SPECIAL) 'Ground Zero' site at:

One last call for new players... The PCs have just liberated a number of captives from a clan of brutish mutants. If you want to play in an active and exciting post-apocalyptic online game, then now's your chance!
