Up against powerhouses like Barbie and Spider-Man: Across the Universe it was D&D: Honor Among Thieves that won the Hugo as the best sci-fi/fantasy film of the last year. Honor Among Thieves was second in every round but the final one, finally surpassing Barbie. It currently sits as the 11th most watched film globally on Paramount+ in 2024.

Strong field of competition, but well-deserved.

Time will be kind to Honor Among Thieves, maybe moreso because it ended up a cult hit rather than extremely mainstream.

I wouldn't say Honor Among Thieves is a cult hit . . . it's a real hit! It just hit theaters at a weird time and so struggled to make the kind of immediate bank Hollywood likes to see. But by every other measure, it's a blockbuster! I just hope the bean counters in La La Land can see that. It would be a mistake not to follow it up with another movie!

The movie had the worst possible release date: a week after John Wick 4 (not the best movie, but still a beloved franchise) and a week before Super Mario Bros, surely a success, but the magnitude of it was understimated. Has the D&D movie published in more calm times, it would at least gained the money to have the sequel greenlit.

I mean...other than the fact it lost money:)

I loved the movie as much as the next dnd nerd, but at the end of the day, it was a commercial failure.
