How did you pick a wireless plan?

Looked for one with good coverage and was influenced by the fact that most of my wife's family had one network and could call in-network for free (no minutes charged). Now the entire family is in-network. No more long distance calling for me, I have enough minutes to cover any other calls I need to make.

Last factor was the corporate discount on the plan I ended up choosing.

I think my employer used to offer a discount. I'll have to look into that.

Has anyone found that they use more minutes than they thought they would? Or less?

I travel a lot (and all over the U.S.) for my job, so nationwide free roaming was an important factor. At the time (2 years ago), Cingular was the only carrier offering that, so I chose them.

They've also got "rollover minutes", which is nice because we never use up our minutes (but I couldn't drop to a lower-minutes plan while keeping the free roaming).

I use my mainly for work and routinely average over 3,000 minutes a month. It was amazing how many places simply told me they had no plans to handle that. In the end a local provider put together a custom plan that I've been tickled with. It was there flexibility that won me over.

Many I have spoken to who have cell phones ... God forbid I get one of those things. No sleep for me then and no privacy whatsoever would result ... have said that one of the biggies for them is coverage and packaged deals. Does your phone company offer a special deal for a cell phone too? (I like the suggestion about using the business angle on things for cell phone sign up suggested earlier....)

Since I live WWAAAAYYYYYYYY in the sticks I have found that the only service that offers linkage way off the beaten track seems to be Verizon (and that's if you go to the right side of the mountain towards its top near the pixie clearing).

So - as kenobi suggested - if you travel this may be an important aspect of things for you.
