Technically I started with Star Wars, RIFTS, and TMNT which were all me and DM/Friend, but I didn’t really “get” RPGs until I played with a group playing D&D.

But it wasn’t until I tried some Vampire the Masquerade did I branch out. Even eventually tried some Shadowrun which I read and loved for awhile.

Though 4th edition d&d Really got me to explore other things.

I didn't start with D&D, but with the Swedish Drakar och Demoner (predecessor to Dragonbane). And even then, we were playing several different games: I was playing with one of my classmates, the classmate's brother, and the brother's friends, and they had all gotten different games to run. So I've never been a one-RPG guy.

I'm not sure of the timeline. I know I first played D&D in 1981 and we tried Traveller, Champions, and Gamma World some time after that and I don't think it was a full year, though I'm pretty sure it was more than just a few months. Ultimately, Villains and Vigilantes would be our next main RPG to sit alongside D&D.

Think it was a couple years and recall trying Runequest once or twice and tried Twilight2000 once or twice. Cannot recall any others unless the 90s MagicTG counts and the odd convention slot of Pathfinder since no D&D was available.
