This is a non-scientific poll.
The first non-D&D RPG I ever played was Palladium's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, followed closely by TSR's Marvel Superheroes. Other popular non-D&D games I played (for short or long), include Cyberpunk 2020, MERP, Deadlands, DC Heroes, Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play (1e), Call of Cthulhu, Chill, 7th Sea (1e), and Legend of the Five Rings (1e to 4e). We always and frequently came back to D&D, however.

We started with Holmes box D&D, with the AD&D Monster Manual for monsters (I don't think the PHB had been released, or at least at age 12 we hadn't sourced it yet). I know by high school I owned the Traveller LBBs; but I don't recall ever actually playing it in a group - but do remember having a ton of lonely fun making sectors and ships. Then I took a break during college (wasted years, in multiple senses of the word "wasted). When I got back into gaming working at a comic shop in the early 90's, it was pretty quick that we tried other games. It might have been 1e Shadowrun. So maybe I'll land on 15 years or so? depends on whether we consider that lonely fun to be "trying another game"

I started in high school with Pathfinder! I really enjoyed it, but Life Stuff got in the way for a while. A college friend (who sadly is no longer with us) got me into D&D, and I've tried a few other systems for one shots and the like.

With the first group back in 1980, we played D&D basic for a few sessions. Not sure how many. Maybe 3-4. One player brought the Traveller little black books because he preferred sci-fi and had started reading Fondation. It was cool with us. We created characters, and yes mine died during training. We played one session. The GM told us we would play again soon. Never happened. He tried to design a sci-fi megalopolis from scratch, instead of adventures and only location he needed. Rookie mistake.

We played CoC, Toon and Top Secret. If someone bought an RPG we would try it, when Star Frontiers came out I bought that, since the group already had someone who owned Traveller. When we switched to AD&D something shifted. The group only wanted to play that. Leaving high school for graduate school was also a factor in selecting a single RPG.

If you said I could ignore playing one session two max then I could say I've never played another for 20 years. I am currently looking into GURPS but don't have time at the moment to run a campaign.
