How many of you would consider playing an older version of D&D?

Would you be open to playing an older version of D&D?

  • No way. Been there, done that. D20 ONLY, baby!

  • Sure, although d20 is my first choice.

  • Yes! I love AD&D baby! (or OD&D)

If that happened, I'd politely decline the invite. I have limited funds, all spent on 3.5. If he/she were willing to share and teach, it is imaginable that I could delve into 3.0. But not if I were playing a Ranger.

It's not a great argument anyways. The only two DM's I've upped with of late are fully into 3.5. It's an improvement across the board.

I'm about ready to play any D20, now that I'm fully converted.

My AD&D game has ground to a hault due to work schedules changing. I'm probably just gonna let it die, *sob*, and start up again with a new Castles & Crusades campaign when it is released, if I like it which seems probable. I don't really care for 3.x D&D to be honest. The only D20, well OGL actually, game so far that I really enjoy is Mutants & Masterminds.

Everything else being equal, I would have more fun playing 3.5e than any previous version of the system. And I would probably have more fun playing with people who agree that 3.5e is superior to all previous versions of the system, regardless of their other skills and talents.

Interesting to note that, of those people who would like/consider playing an OOP version of D&D, most would choose Basic/Expert/Rules Cylcopedia Dungeons and Dragons over 1st edition AD&D (let alone 2nd edition AD&D, for which there appears to be very little love).

Mark me down as desiring OD&D. I'd play an older edition, especially if it were OD&D. I'd jump at the chance. However, I wouldn't play AD&D if I was paid to, but I would play AD&D2e with a good DM and good campaign.

With the right GM (not me), I might go for a AD&D 1e or Basic D&D adventure. It would have to be absolutely fantastic for me to be interested in more than one adventure, though.

Of the two, I might be more tempted by Basic than 1e, if only because I had a blast when I was a kid playing Castle Amber, and people always praise the D&D Cyclopedia version of the rules (which I never played much of, and never even read the rules beyond Intermediate, or whatever it was that came after Expert).

I'd probably much prefer 3e/3.5e/d20 (or GURPS, or Unisystem, or Feng Shui, or . . .)

A while back, I had a friend who never really caught up with 3.x run a 2e game, just because that's what he was most familiar with. And right before that, a 1e game based off an "it's D&D but let's change a few names to avoid paying royalties" module.

Both were playable, although I was repeatedly noticing places where D20 would've been smoother. What ironically most bothered me were little things; wizards whos players didn't know what their spells did (DM with tons of books, novice players, pregen characters) made me long for sorcerers, and I was frustrated that spontaneous curing couldn't be houseruled back in. But for a nostalgia sesson, I'd be game.

I have a feeling that most of the games out there that didn't convert are more like '3.25'. My rule is that I run a 3.0 game, but if you personally think XXX class or rule was better done in 3.5 I'm more than happy to houserule something in. In fact I've done this with several spells and rules, or altered the same spells in a different way - for instance the attibute buffs give +4 for 1/minute per level, Haste works as 3.0 except no AC bonus, etc.

And for me, if someone doesn't want to play 3e then I'd rather play a non-D&D game altogether than return to AD&D. I might be talked into a one-shot, but that's about it. I would give hackmaster a roll though. Otherwise I'd suggest Unisystem, Exalted, or Fate.

I didn't like 2nd edition very much, but I'd play either 1st edition or Basic D&D. In fact, I'm starting a BD&D game on another forum very soon, and I'd love to get into a 1st edition game.
