Well, I often wait until I can get a discount, or buy stuff on eBay
E-Bay has been my "godsend" as it were. I haven't spent over $15 (including shipping) for the last 6 - 12 WotC hardcover books released. You know, the ones that retail for $29.99 or more?

It's cool.

Oh, Ghostwalk just arrived. Nabbed that for $15..! Sorry, gotta go read....

Easily over $1000. Probably close to $3000 for d20 stuff, and if you include older editions, minis, other games it's probably close to $7000. I tend to spend upwards of $100/month on rpgs and supplies.

Good god, I never thought of the value of my collection as a whole.

I did not count miniatures and scenery, because I was using them in my Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay campaign. If I move on from D&D I will continue to use them. I spend roughly $50.00/month on gaming stuff. Checking last year it was $63.00/month - yikes!

Since 3E came out well over $2000.
Since the Red Box came out probably $8000.
I love just reading let alone playing and I am a collector.
I don't have the very beginning stuff (ie white box and family)
But from the Red Box till the release of 3E I own most of what there is (Hell I have 3 Thieves Packs for some reason and the entire Al-Qadim line in Mint Shrink Wrap  )
With 3E I have all WOTC stuff except Ravenloft and Dragonlance (decided I cannot collect everything :D ) Most Everything S&SS, Legends & Lairs, several EN PDFs and various other PDFs.

I should look into what it is all worth for insurance purposes at least.

does contributing money towards a D&D news related website also count? ;)

i have given to several sites for various reasons.

I've bought over a 1000$ in books each of the three years of d20. Heck, I've given over a $1000 dollars worth of books away :D

Edit: This is not a good place to ask this question though. Many of us are a little too serious about the game and enjoy buying the books. We earn the money, so might as well spend it on something we love. See the sig :D

Definitely right in the middle. Helps that I haven't purchased any 3.5 stuff. Just the 3.0 core and splat books, minis, paint, and a few odds and ends.

All in all, I do think D&D is a cheap hobby. The hours of enjoyment per dollar is very, very low. Probably in the pennies/hour range.

I bought the PH, DMG, MM and FRCS. I got the oriental adventures as a gift and another forgotten realms book (I don't remember the title. Lords of Darkness I think).

I spend my money on guitars and amps. It's MUCH more expensive than collecting D&D stuff. So it leaves twice as less money for D&D stuff.

How much I have spent and how much I have are two different questions. Most of my family knows that the easiest way to shop for a present for me is to ask for my wish list of gaming stuff. Speaking of which, I need to update with the holidays coming along. :)

I budget myself $50/month. I usually go over in some way. Especially when I am AIM'ing Jeff at D20books.com. In September, I was asking for a few books and trying to stay under my budget. He tossed one more in, dropped the discount just a wee bit and sucked me in. :) Gotta love that.

I am a DM, have been for ~23 years. I spend much more than necessary to play the game. I spend much more than my players. Even with all that, I consider it a cheap investment. For $50 I can pick up at least one book, oftentimes 2+. I will receive some sort of recurring value on those for years to come. Or, I could spend $50 on a video game and get how much play out of it? Or maybe 1 nice dinner? Paperback books might be a pretty good value, but I still think the gaming books have more re-use. It is a hobby that you can get into for relatively cheap - the PHB, a set of dice and paper & pencil.
