How much should HP scale?

How many more HP should a 10th level character have than a 1st level character of t

Sorry, I had to vote "utter rubbish" though it's an interesting topic to think about.

Why that vote? Because a) you want us to assume a 1-20 level run and b) you don't have an option for "variable - describe below".

That said, I'm probably closer to the 8-10x end of things as is but if the poll went to level 20 it'd be more like 12-14x.

And that said, I like the idea of keeping the numbers down, to a point. 4e starts way too high then doesn't go high enough after that. 3e starts at about the right place but eventually goes way too high. And I despise fixed h.p. gain at any level - I long ago fixed my 1e game such that where you would previously have got a fixed h.p. gain at higher level you now roll a smaller die (if you look at the 1e PH you'll see the fixed gain is in all cases the average of a half-size die for that class, as close as whole-integer arithmetic will allow). But slowing it down at higher levels is fine with me.

And high h.p. totals for some of the monsters is also fine by me.
