I am tired of political threads

Turanil

First Post
Since we cannot speak of politics on ENworld, I spent a couple of days posting on a French politician's messageboard, most of the time giving my opinion on subjects I know nothing about. But now I feel bored to death with political threads. My interests in the field were short lived. I am not going to become a politician myself anytime soon it seems...

Some of you may wonder why I was doing this, rather than working on my novel. Well, I was originally searching info on beliefs and opinions about economy, to flesh out the economy of the world I will describe in my novel. But now my brain is confused rather than enlightened...

I used to be a political junkie. I'd listen to talk radio at work the whole time it was on (a local guy from 9am - noon and Rush Limbaugh from 1pm - 4pm), but lately I've just gotten burned out on it all. I listen just enough now to know what issues are at the forefront. I've found listening constantly to anyone rant about political issues makes me aware of little else but this: Democrats whine about Republicans, and Republicans are spineless and whine about Democrats. Neither group seems to really do much (though there are individual exceptions on both sides of the aisle who actually do work).

In other countries, I suspect it's much the same...though I'm not sure how many countries have more than two viable political parties (which would certainly liven up the discourse).

Well, we have got more than two and it only makes things worse, IMO. It's always "the others" that hinder progress. And because there are more than two parties, no side can actually gain enough votes to actually do something, except for stuffing their pockets. It's sad.

It's why we have the rules that we do here. There's nothing like Politics or Religious discussion to start a circular conversation that turns into a whirlpool going nowhere (hey, what's that sucking sound?) While it's nice to know where someone is on the socio-political meter, to know what topics will prove fruitful, I'd much rather discuss gaming, births, deaths, life issues, and general celebrations of living. Queen Dopplepopolis' Fast-food thread held my attention more than a circular political debate would have. :D

(Whether this is a sad commentary on me I'll leave to the individual reader.) ;)

I am occasionally a news junkie, but even that gets tiresome. I will check all of the news sites, read the paper, watch news TV on cable, etc. every opportunity I get for a while, then get burned out on it and stop. I do the same with weather. Living in a very hurricane prone area and working in a weather dependent capacity at work (in the late summer and early fall - marching band director), I check www.nhc.noaa.gov and www.weather.com regularly during hurricane and marching band seasons, but after that don't even check daily temperatures for months because I get burned out on it.

I think it happens on anything you spend a lot of time doing after a while (at least for most people).

Actually, it's the information I got after two days of mindless political opinions posting. I will have to think about it where my novel is concerned. But not today, later, tomorrow maybe...

I think the big difference between internet gaming and internet politics discussions is that when people debate things in gaming, knowledge matters. If somebody has read-up on the issue under discussion, that matters in a gaming discussion in ways that it does not in politics. People feel more entitled to speak in an uninformed, irrational way about politics than they do almost anywhere besides areas of religion (and at least some theologies glorify irrationality so I can see their point there). I am exhausted by politics threads because everybody seems impervious to information and analysis so there is none of the give and take that ENWorld gaming threads retain, even at their most acrimonious.

I've become exactly the same way. As to whether this is due to ignorance or apathy, I don't know and I don't care.

Me three. I read CNN to keep up on what's happening. I also read other things that interest me but I don't make it a habit to contstantly be "in the know" about what's going on in the politcal arena. I find most political threads on the net to be either pedantic or juvenile with few exceptions.
