I HATE the term GISH

I do not care for the term.

Unless you are a Githyanki fighter/mage and it's a cultural thing, in which case that's fine. Otherwise no Gish for you.

Gish sounds like onomatopoeia for something slimy and wet being squeezed. May as well call yourself a Fap.

Oldtimer here. It bothers me not.

You'll never hear me use it at the gaming table, but AFAIAC, it's a perfectly functional and tolerable and commonly used term for online build discussion.

According to http://www.romans-in-britain.org.uk/glo_military_glossary_s.htm , there were quite a few terms used.

They used to call a ballista a "scorpion", for one; "under the eagle" meant "on active duty." A "Boar's head" was a wedge formation. Shipwrecks were "concha", or "seashells." There are plenty more listed, not to mention what didn't survive because no one recorded them.
In particular, I like "Dexa"; it is decribed as a motto inscribed on lead sling bullets.

It means "catch" :]

As to the OP, I'm 19 years old, heard the term only on the net, and it doesn't bother me half as much as your agist staement does.

cheers,

It makes me think of calamari.

Mmm, calamari.

Not exactly something I would want my character associated with.
I have a PC whose nickname is 'Tasty'.

Polyhedron 159, Page 12, 2nd Complete Sentence to end of paragraph.

Polyhedron 159 came out in 2003; did the term "gish" ever appear anywhere before that? Just curious as to how far back the term goes.

In any case, even if it is a Githyanki word, it seems strange to me. Wonder what kind of etymology is behind it (I'm sure none, RW speaking).

Gith was a proper name, IIRC. Now, like many/most proper names it probably has some literal meaning/association with a word or phrase. So, seemingly, then so would Gish. If "gish" means something akin to "warrior-wizard", has there ever been any indication of what "gith" means? Or "yanki"?

I wouldn't say I hate the term, but I do think it is stupid.

Fighter/Mage would be my preferrence. Is it really that much harder to say or spell than "gish"?
